A spiralling corridor was drawn over a map of Berlin, deliniatng the course of an imaginary 24 hour day. Devided in 24 hourly segments, the path leads from the eastern periphery of the city, tapering towards the center (12 noon), outwards, to halt at its western fringes at midnight. Hourrly segments were allocated (drawn by lot), to a composer and video artist who set out on the 21st of June '96 to record visual and audio material from their respective segment - 4 alloted to each artist - as the basis for the composition. No place and no time have preference because they might be more spectacular or appear more interesting than others.
The project aims not for a complete portrayal but rather observances, passing glances, insights, listening, and spontaneous interventions, evoking mood and variety of places as a fragmentary juxtaposition. Previewing of shooting locations was not planed, thus corresponding to the overall chance element; the challenge being to work solely with gathered material to be condensed into a seperate two and a half minute music and a video composition for each section.
In this installation, based on the city segments described, all times and places, all the images and the compositions exist simultaneously. Through an interface, a virtual 24 sided dice all 24 times 24 possible combinations of music and video compositions are available at random access. Sound and image are recombined yielding an other, a new reference of meaning.
Navigation through the `stock' of visual-acoustic materia allows for other routes to be searched and alternative destinations to arrive upon. Image and sound order collide, then again may harmonise unexpectedly. By chance or conscious rearrangement something new will result.
