This was really powerful - that opening speech... made my skin crawl. I hope when I'm older, when my kids are the age I am now, they won't have to listen to disturbing nonsense like this. It's such a sad phobia.

This was great - beautiful job. I think you're really starting to trade-mark that shot of the spinning camera angles ;)

I want to like this way more than just once!
  • Haha, thank you, Mike! Yeah, I'm starting to use that camera movement a lot now. I guess it's just fun to do. I'm really glad you got a chance to see it. I think it's very sad that the video even has to get made this way, you know? I really appreciate the kind words, and hopefully my future videos will evolve into more things like this rather than just a video journal of my trips. Talk to you soon, Mike! -Matt

you have to understand that there is no such thing as a sin religion was made up to describe something unexplainable and has created wars and nonsense.
  • Ameen Roayan plus 1 year ago
People created wars shelby not religion..
people kill each other not religion...
    people do nonsense not religion...

religion can be either right or wrong...
and that right or wrong is not a topic of debate but a topic of investigation...

you cant blame a belief for an action
you can only blame a person for an action

you say there is no such thing called sin...
but even away from religion guilt exists...
not just in humans but even animals..

ever seen a cat steal food from the table..
the ears the eyes the head turning back in shyness when you corner her as she thinks ur going to harm her..

even a kitten understood the concept of wrong...which is initially to religion what a sin is...
  • You can blame conditioning for many things.
  • mike 1 year ago
While all people are capable of aggression - an evolutionary trait that shouldn't be labeled as 'right' and wrong', religion definitely is to blame for many violent and aggressive acts.

Christians look at homosexuals, and feel as if these people are different than them. They feel angered, and hatred. Brought on through illogical conclusions, and some fucked up idea that they are 'sinners'.

The whole idea of 'sinners' is ridiculous. A fictionous book dictating these laws that people should abide by. They teach moral values, and people blindly accept them without questioning. They label homsexuals as 'wrong' without thinking about it scientifically, and especially evolutionary. They don't ask themselves, "what is the difference between us?" They simply dismiss them completely. Why are there homosexuals? Well, for various reasons. Particularly various levels of estrogen, and other PHYSICAL factors. Not to say, a man who is considered to have a very normal cognitive makeup, cannot be gay.

So where does this anger come from, this hatred?

Well, that is also an evolutionary thing. As people feel pride in belonging to a group, and people feel satisfaction from belittling another group, as well as doing what is 'right'.

We have a tendency to base our actions purely on emotion, without any logic. Many people are simply unable to think in a logically manner, due to lack of education... and well.. the heavy influence of other views... religion.

Religion is fucking ridiculous. And by all means, I'm not calling all religious people stupid. I mean, if you were living in a rural village in Africa, and witnessed lightening... well of course you'd associate it with a 'higher power'.

But it just amazes me that people in educated societies, blindly follow the ridiculous rules, that other people, yes people not gods, created well before most scientific findings. It's ignorant, and it is a huge issue.
  • I totally agree, Mike.
  • Mark Vimeo 1 year ago
And what of religions that doesn't hate homosexuals? What of one that fully supports, loves, accepts people as they are?

Mike, you yourself said "They teach moral values, and people blindly accept them without questioning." Who's fault is this? Individuals. To say that people are forced to believe under threat of Hell is a fallacy of circular reasoning as well, as, who's choice is it to believe in Hell? Who's choice is it to even believe in God? As good as people can be, there are some ignorant mother fuckers out there.

Religion is not to blame for stupidity. If one chooses to stay ignorant, it is a personal choice.

The majority (seriously, look it up) of Christian religions encourage personal questioning and finding a balance between logic and faith. Without faith, we are can know nothing. Without logic (having only faith), we are useless zombies.

Mike, if you continue to think the way you do, with all this hate built up in you, there is no difference between you and the sheep that blindly reject homosexuality.

We have precious little time on Earth. Let us love everyone.

Oh, and great video Matthew. Extremely moving and thought provoking.
  • James 8 months ago
@ Mark... not quite sure why you call yourself Mark Vimeo as you don't appear to be a Vimeo representative.

You say 'what of religions that doesn't hate homosexuals?' There is only one religion which doesn't condemn gays & lesbians. Its Buddhism and even that is disputed as a religion.

You also state 'To say that people are forced to believe under threat of Hell is a fallacy of circular reasoning as well, as, who's choice is it to believe in Hell?' Its not a fallacy at all. As a child brought up catholic I know very well this experience. If you questioned the faith you were punished. You're trying to say that a child who is going to be punished by his teachers, priests, nuns and parents (their entire authoritative world) & ostracised from their peers for not believing in religion is actually choosing to believe. Thats not choice its a dictatorship.

Most Christian religions do not encourage children to question their faith. There's no looking up needed. I experienced it. Later on adults are able to debate various issues but by then the damage is done. The belief that the bible is in fact the word of god is entrenched. You cannot underestimate the power of indoctrination of children during their young formative years.

Mike is not as you state showing hatred at all, he's just saying it as it is. The bible is not the word of god its written by man. After centuries of institutionally sanctioned suffering, suppression, hatred and murder at the hands of religion and churches do you not expect a little anger to be reflected back at them especially as Catholicism and the Pope are still teaching that having a normal healthy relationship with someone of the same sex is a sin? You say there is 'precious little time on Earth. Let us love everyone.' I agree whole heartedly with the statement but where is the love from the Pope towards gay people? You can't expect people not to be critical of religion and accuse them of hatred if they are.

You know, while I was working for Sky News Ireland I was despached to Rome to cover Pope John Pauls funeral. Whilst I was there we interviewed a lot of gay men and women who waited in line for over 12 hours to see the pontiff laid to rest, rainbow flags flying.... and when asked why, despite the popes dismissal of their rights, would they want to see him the all replied the same. "We loved him even though he couldn't love us"
Some where along the line God got hijacked by religion and religion got hijacked by biggots and lost all it's merit in this world. Though the good news is that we will defeat it.
    Very profound piece Matthew....
  • I feel the same way. It's a shame that a something built on such intense love has become so hateful. Thank you for the really great comment!

That's why religion exists. People don't want to be alone. To think that something out there loves them no matter what they do, as long as they apologize for it...can you imagine how good it must feel? If you truly and 100% believed that...you would never feel alone. Someone would always be with you, and someone would always love you. I envy Christians....I envy religion. I wish I could believe it, but I can't. I know something for sure though....homsexuals are no more evil than anyone else. The human race....it's evil. We can't avoid that, every one of us has evil inside of us. It's got nothing to do with Adam or Eve or any of that. No one made us evil...none of us can be entirely loving and caring and accepting all the time. Don't expect the homophobes to be accepting. They don't have to be. Just love yourself. You are special, even if you are evil.

  • Wow you need to get this playing at a few festivals, awesome.
  • jim le fevre plus 2 years ago

  • Daisy 3 Pictures plus 2 years ago
If you stop and think about it, Vimeo IS a huge film festival. But it's better. You don't have to be at a certain theater, in a certain city, at an exact time, to see these films. And when you are touched by a film, you can share it with people who will have the exact same opportunity to see it that you did. And the conversations about the film begin, and continue, literally, for years.

Film festivals are wonderful - our second feature has played over 70 film festivals now - but don't discount Vimeo, and the web, as a venue for sharing films. This clip has over 47,000 views. It would have to play over 150 film festivals to have an audience that wide.

    Beautiful job, Matthew.

BTW, this was brought to my attention by the Critics webisode with Steve Zacuto. Thanks to Steve and Philip Bloom for sharing it.
  • Thank you very much, Mark! I totally agree with you on the film festival idea. Although, it is a nice acknowledge to be named in a festival. :)

This is a great work... mov¡ng, makes you feel, makes you think, and the visuals are just poetic...

The essence of all human difference issues is that stupid idea we have to understand it all, so in this case, if a person cant understand homosexuality, than it's bad ... when the truth is that everything is not ment to be understood by everyone... the thing is too just accept the fact, because either way the fact is what it is and that will never ever change.

"There are two infinite things: The universe and human stupidity. I'm not so sure of the first one" - Albert Einstein -
  • Haha, I love the quote. I wish I could've used it in the video! Thank you so much for that awesome insight! I appreciate it, Hache!

  • Mitchell LeBlanc 2 years ago
Very, very moving Matthew. I'm studying the Philosophy of Religion at University and through my studies, or leisure, I come across many people who condemn homosexuality.

I am not religious myself, but I will say this... somewhere in history religion really seems to have diverted from the beautiful potential it had for positive change and reformation. Somewhere along the lines it turned from a mechanism that could have been used for enrichment, into a mechanism utilized to deliver hatred under the guise of faith.

At any rate, I sincerely hope that in the future we stop looking for divinity amongst the pages of outdated books and find the divinity that we are all capable of as human beings.

I sincerely hope that you are not the victim of such persecution, though I feel that even if not being persecuted directly, you feel the brunt of the bigotry that exists...

    Excellent video Matthew!
  • Thanks for the comment, Mitchell. I've only had some intense moments with my loon-republican, anti-everything-that-not-white-straight-and-Christian-family, and just some other horrible experiences seeing people I know trashed upon by ignorance. It's pretty disgusting sometimes. That "Slumdog Wedding" video I made was a hard weekend because I was shoved in the middle of a very conservative Tennessee town that seemed like it was filled with nothing but Jesus and guns. It was a little scary for me, haha. Anyway, thank you for the really awesome words, and I hope to see more of your videos!!

It's hard to believe that in 2009 we are even having a discussion about personal freedom. What two consenting people do is their own F###ing business.

Three words: Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of happiness. Why would we want to deprive anyone of any of these rights. The conversation should be over, unless those three words don't apply to EVERYONE in 2009. As far as I’m concerned, the constitution does not exclude gays; consequently, they should have the same right to marry as straight people do under liberty & pursuit of happiness. They shouldn’t have to be humiliated with us having to vote to give them rights that the constitution already guarantees them. Here’s the part that gets me, so many of the right feel that gay marriage will somehow hurt straight marriage. Straight marriage doesn’t have such a great record of success, they really should keep their mouth shut. I would think they would be a little embarrassed.

Well done Matthew, you've broached a subject that should really not be a subject but unfortunately is.

    Mitchell,
Well put. Religion could be such a force for nice and good, but unfortunately I don’t see that. Even in its lightest forms it’s extremism to me, with their mission to be to convert me. It's a lot of: if you don't believe what I do, I will have to force my opinion on you, or they need to save people. Why can’t they just hand their shingle out there and if people show up fine, if not, leave the rest of us alone.

The real problem in all of this is tolerance, if we as a people can have tolerance toward something different, we wouldn’t have any problems both political and religious. And that’s a big IF?

This is beautiful and powerful, Matthew: a beautiful message expressed in a powerful way. Your audio montage of anti-gay hatred contrasts so poignantly against the joyful, loving images of the people and places in your video. You are certainly an artist in sound and ideas as much as you are in images.

I’m so glad to see you using your art to make a statement and take a stand. Just today I was telling some of my video students about the “essay” genre of documentary filmmaking, and I used your work as a prime example of it. I told them that this genre can be a very effective vehicle for making political and philosophical statements, both good and bad (as an example of the bad, I referred to Leni Riefenstahl’s work for the Nazis). So I was delighted to find a message from you today, watch this piece and read the wave of mostly positive comments you have gotten from viewers.

You are taking a genre of filmmaking that can be merely “warm and fuzzy” and giving it a real edge. Where many filmmakers with your talents would be using them to make car commercials, you are going out on a limb, baring your beliefs and your soul.

Thanks for having the courage and clarity to make this movie and share it with the world. I understand more and more why Kenney Smith admires you so much and says that Matthew Brown is “his own man” and “one of a kind.”
  • This is such a nice comment, Vaun! I really really really appreciate your kind words. It really raises my spirits. I've been getting harassed quite a bit tonight about the video. A lot of hateful people out there. I've had to delete some of the messages, mostly on youtube. Your comment is the best way to call it a night tonight. I'll sleep easy now, haha. I'm glad you were able to check the video out. If you see Kenny give him a big hug for me, haha. It would be great to grab a coffee, Vaun, and talk about filmmaking, writing, etc.

Hi Matthew, Thanks for sharing this short, a lot of the footage reminded me of Brokeback Mountain, I also loved that you used Sigur Ros as the music very fitting. I know what you are shooting on camera wise and you prove that it's less important the equipment but the vision and the mood of the piece that is key. Overall very well executed, a few technical issues but who cares. Well done you have taken a subject which a lot people may avoid but you've done it and that's the main thing. You have sensitivity in your filmaking and that what makes your vision interesting. Best wishes Mark

Overwhelmingly powerful! How can the American people hate eachother so much? How can these Christians stick so much to their ideologies? Not that it would be better in my part of the world, but I never understood why hate speech could be allowed in public media.
Thank you for this video nevertheless.
  • It really is horrible how this country is divided so harshly. I think hate speech should definitely be allowed in the public media because it allows for people to access how extreme and real the situation is. It helps for people to make videos like these to show the contrast between the two sides. Thank you so much for the comment and your words. I thank you!

Great camera and editing work as always. Pity you've gone political with this one though. University indoctrination is very obvious nowadays. The arrogance of the "academy" has become breathtakingly audacious. No real arguments. Mostly, like Christian missionaries of old, an assumption of moral supremacy. Simply quoting from an ideological opponent is enough to dismiss the argument as wrong and the individual as evil. Epithets become the first stage of a process of intimidation and thuggery. All too human my friend.

If you think that the fanatical and very powerful political homosexuality movement is all flowers and respectability then you are seriously illusioned. America is on the road to socialism and State indroctination. As is already happening in other countries further down that road than yours, wherever the State moves in on the lives of your young children, they will be targetted by political homosexuality. And when your five year old sons are being taught about the pleasures of homosexual sex in the classroom, political homosexuals will use the law to silence the dissent of rightly concerned parents.

Political homosexuality has nothing to do with liberty and classical liberal values. At all.

The individuals in your film are having fun. Good for them. That's how it should be. Loving friends enjoying life together.
  • It's called the "Ladder of Inference". When somebody says something and the observer adds their own projections, fears, and world view in order to draw a conclusion. This video is not political in the least bit. It's about hatred vs. acceptance. If you think it's political then I suggest you watch it again with a less closed mind. You obviously think that being gay is wrong by saying,

"And when your five year old sons are being taught about the pleasures of homosexual sex in the classroom, political homosexuals will use the law to silence the dissent of rightly concerned parents."

I respect your views on gays, but this video is meant for people like you, so I hope it sticks with you.

I really think you should watch the video again so you can shake off your political spin on it. This video is about love and putting out the wildfire of discrimination.

By the way, no one is going to teach a five-year-old about the pleasures of gay sex. I don't know anyone who teaches a five-year-old the pleasures of ANY sex. You're blowing everything out of proportion. Sorry to say, but you are.
  • The Watcher 2 years ago
Leaving inference open to the observer might, although this is doubtful given cultural audience expectations for these things, only work without the context of your pro-homosexual comment responses.

"I respect your views on gays..." You mean my views on political homosexuality. I have homosexual colleagues and friends. The political spin "I" put on it is pickled throughout the comments prior to my own. By "people like you" I assume you have a straw man ready made for me? Copyright of the academy or the media?

"By the way, no one is going to teach a five-year-old about the pleasures of gay sex." Might I point you towards some State-schools in the UK for a refutation of that line? Parents are set to be fined and children will be treated as truants if parents pull them out of, what amounts to, State-funded homosexual indoctrination classes. For prepubescent children. Hundreds of thousand of pounds were spent "researching" the recommendations for the policy.

Political homosexuals are also set to make it illegal (carrying a prison sentence) to link homosexuals to pedofilia. This bill passed through the Lords with a mere one hour of "scrutiny". There are many more instances of these kinds of things. As I said, some countries are further down the path that America is now on. You can see into the future if you look without prejudice and learn to accept some unsavoury "off-message" truths.

As always, a lovely video (see the last paragraph of my previous comment). Keep up the good work. Nice to cross swords with a gentleman.
  • Again, this video is not political. You're making stuff up. There's always going to be a combative comment or few in these situations, and I totally respect your views. Someday we'll all realize that being gay is completely natural...it's as natural as people being born as twin's, as black, or as a woman. What people are not born with are prejudice and religious faith...they are raised and influenced in their lives to develop into that. Me being gay is something that cannot change no matter how hard I tried, but people pushing hatred and segregation is something that is learned and CAN be helped. One day we'll all love one another. Unless, of course, greed and ignorant hatred wipes us all off the face of the earth. Thanks for the comment, and have a nice weekend!
  • The Watcher 2 years ago
"Someday we'll all realize that being gay is completely natural". Most Westerners see it like that Matthew. Each to his own as long as others are not physically harmed against their own sane volition. I couldn't agree more. You've also implicitly defended my right to say "combative" things you completely disagree with. For that you have my utmost respect. Good old classical liberalism hasn't died yet. Have a good weekend and film something nice for us!

Sory but as a product of the UK's education system, and a gay man I call bullshit on this one. Would like to see hard proof (not conjecture) because when I grew up there was not a smidgen of anything that reflected who I was in school.

And in the end, that's what it's about - not teaching anything, especially 5 year olds who don't really have an idea of sexuality yet anyway - but if once there had been something that reflected who I was I would not have spent most of my childhood feeling painfully alone.

That's the real danger...making kids feel like they're the only one, or freaks...look at the suicide stats, being gay like being straight cannot be taught; but those could be prevented.
  • Well, if the UK is teaching about ANY sexual education at the age of five, that's pretty disgusting. Can you give me a link to an factual article discussing that it is indeed gay "SEX" and not diversity...and that it is the age of five? I'd love to take a look at it. And yes, it is very disgusting that people might do such a thing. Although, having gay teachers isn't anything different than having straight teachers. I know plenty of gay teachers who are some of the most amazing mentors to children I've ever seen.
  • Ben Hunter 1 year ago
As someone who is still in the UK education system there is absolutely no way that five year olds are being taught about the pleasures of any kind of sex. Sex Education is introduced in early primary school but only through lessons on relationships, friendships etc. Puberty is talked about at the very end of primary school and it's not until late secondary (ages 15-18) that sexual intercourse is even mentioned. I believe homosexuality is only referred to to aid acceptance - thus your comment 'Watcher' is totally unprecedented and false.
  • Thank you for the insight, Ben. I hope the people above read it.

'Might I point you towards some State-schools in the UK for a refutation of that line? Parents are set to be fined and children will be treated as truants if parents pull them out of, what amounts to, State-funded homosexual indoctrination classes.'

I think Tom you read too much of the Daily Mail where they twist facts. There is NO 'indoctrination classes' at all. Why would any sane parent have an objection to schools teaching that there is more than one sexual orientation and you don't choose it. Who would want their children to be taught only a small amount of facts with regard to maths and sciences? Why edit out information? Should we really be like the Nazis who burnt books which contained things that when against their bigoted views? The idea that our children SHOULDN'T be given a full education on every subject is abhorrent. Its very telling that conservatives have to resort to lies about teaching children about sex to get an objection. The simple and and less offensive truth is that children are getting a good, solid education about the world around them which will make them well adjusted, intelligent and knowledgable citizens when they graduate.

Ok, I have to apologize and to say that I totally misunderstood the message on that video. I saw the title and went directly on the wrong direction after hearing the audio (guess my english isn't enough good too).
(edit : your description in the group Vimians got me wrong too "Mother Nature would have to disagree...")
I was already writing a forum post about a discriminate video recently added.
That should give me a lesson.
  • Haha, well I'm glad you didn't post to the forum. Thanks for checking out the video, and thank you for being compassionate enough to try and stand up against hatred with your posting.
