This was my first proper attempt at doing some filming with my new Canon 5dmk2. I had been shooting in Hawaii using the EX3 and Letus Ultimate and the Panasonic Lumix GH1.

I got round most of the issues with exposure. Read about how I did it in my blog here: philipbloom.co.uk/2009/05/09/my-first-canon-5d-mk2-footage/

Music is Always Returning by the great Brian Eno.

This was filmed for the Kauai Visitor Information Channel.

If you could only choose one to shoot video with would it be the Mk2 of the GH1?
  • Philip Bloom plus 7 months ago
oh the canon as I have such a terrific collection of Nikon lenses which work a treat on that camera...shot awesome stuff today with GH1 at Joshua Tree though.

great stuff Philip! I went from primarily an EX1 to a 5D recently and man I am getting blown away every day by how good this little thing is !!

I am curious about the GH1 how do you compare it to the 5D?
  • Philip Bloom plus 7 months ago
it's much easier to use but not as good a picture or low light...

This footage is very engaging! In my opinion the 5D mkII is perfect for locked down or static shots. The color and d.o.f. is out of this world. :D
  • Philip Bloom plus 7 months ago
exactly, for locked off shots is amazingf

I've had my 5D2 for a couple of months now, loving it, and glad to see your good self taking it through its paces there Philip.

Maybe a little oversaturated for my tastes, but cracking shots as usual never the less.
    Thanks for posting dude.

Would you recommend the Canon over the EX1 with Letus for videography? Thinking about buying one! Wondering also how easy it is to import the footage into Final Cut Pro.

I have been to Kauai many times and to those places that you shot. Your images however, are so delightfully stunning that I felt as though I have seen this place for the first time.

In your blog about converting the h.264 files from the 5DM2 to XDCAM using Mpegstreamclip, do you notice any quality loss?

I am very interested in getting the 5DM2 and using it as a locked down cam to capture natural scenes, I am just concerned about the quality from H.264, then converted to XDCAM > edits (like color and level enhancements) > to finally rendering it out to another codec like PhotoJpeg or back to H.264. I know this is such a mundane question, but when you get the chance, I would like your take on this. Thank you and thank you for sharing your inspiring images.

Phillip – don’t you ever grow tired of filming in all these wonderful places? You should come visit us here in the Midwest United States, we have both type of scenery, field corn & soy beans!

Good to see you using a 5D Mk2 amongst others these days Phil. You add credibility to the camera by giving it a go. I agree its a great camera when not being moved around too much and the footage straight from the camera almost needs no work in post. I am loving mine.

Are you going to give the Red Scarlet a go when it arrives?

Great work as usual and the footage of the man and his son was excellent.

Beautiful! You really captured the essence of Kauai, and thank you for not putting Hawaiian music to it. It's too bad you didn't get up to the canyon so as to show some of the juxtaposition of the island. You'll just have to go back. I bet KVIC was blown away.

Do you prefer the Canon 5d Mark II to the GH1 or the GH1 to the Canon 5d Mark II?

I would like to know your opinion on the matter.

Thanks so much for posting this. I visited Kauai for the 1st time in June and saw it on KVIC a couple of times while I was there. I was really happy to find it online. I can watch this anytime and instantly be transported back to the north shore... thank you again.
