Cross-sectional 1H NMR pilot images of an Epiblema scudderiana larva (head end is right) in its Solidago gall, acquired at 0°C. Though the original purpose of this pilot image was to adjust larval position and acquisition parameters prior to the image series depicted in Fig. 3 of dx.doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0003826 , the contrast here has now been set such that the Solidago tissue (rendered in blue) can be discerned. E. scudderiana is a freeze-avoiding species that can withstand temperatures below the freezing point of water by synthesizing large amounts of the cryoprotectant glycerol.
