I decided to film my morning commute to work in HD with the ultimate intention of uploading here to test Vimeo's HD capabilities. Shot with a Sanyo Xacti I had on loan from work for the day.

Note that the video is under 5 minutes, and the only parts I sped up were when I stopped: waiting for a red light or to turn.

Cool experiment -- very jealous of your sunshine :) -- and these are cool little cameras, no? Got one the other day myself. Still playing with it.

You got one? I'm jealous, but you should get crackin' here on Vimeo with HD uploads - although, right now, it's being sponsored by Canon so come 2008, it'll probably be a paid-subscription feature, which I would totally get if I had an HD camera. I still might, because Vimeo rocks.

Ad overlay has me liking Vimeo less and less. Bill, the vid plays choppy. Did you render out at less than 1Kbs?

Never seen an ad overlay on Vimeo. You're running too many apps/extensions then, because the recommended output settings are 3-5 Kbps: vimeo.com/help/hd

    1) 3-5k is fine for local media playback (as in playing off your hard drive). Never seen that high of a bit rate advocated for streaming media.

    2) There is an ad message superimposed on your video that says "Brought to you by Canon."

Was Bill Couch's Sony camera story funded by Canon . . .?

    3) Did you have both hands on the wheel?
  • William Couch 2 years ago
    1) Understandably, but they advocate a higher bitrate as most uploads on here are available for download in their native format.

    2) That's only shown over HD videos (and only before playback) through the end of the year as Canon is offsetting the costs of hosting HD videos. See vimeo.com/blog:70

    3) I had my left hand on the wheel while my right hand was balanced on the compartment between the two front seats to hold the camera up.

Am uploading a video with a native size of 480 x 605 just to see flexible this service is. Am expecting Vimeo to choke on it.

But really who says Web video has to be horizontal? Esp if it is video of newspaper page designs.

Lemme know how it goes. It accommodated my "Save Me" video when it didn't have widescreen-functionality a while back.

Also, Vimeo renders the video twice, once in HD and once for standard viewing. You can toggle via the "HD is On" button overlay.

It's on blip - no problem - I FTP'd it even and no ads.

    Now trying for blip

I also wouldn't get too hung up on spinning up the hype of "HD" video for the Web.

1280 is nice and I have been shooting 1280 wide doccies on four continents with my Leica-lensed point and shoot for 20 months now. But I always render it out to 480 wide for the vast audience who cannot stream 3kbps video files. (Which is still the majority of people online)

While it is nice to have a 1280 30FPS native cam, I would never go so far as to call my shots "HD video" - even though the output technically qualifies as "HD." Still a huge leap between a point and shoot and something like the slightly larger A1U that can shoot 1080i assets.
