All the new videos up til now have been recorded during the day - sun shining, birds singing, mad people using power tools on the roof... that kind of thing.

So I thought I'd shift it to later in the evening, see what happened. Had to play quieter, so the audio quality's not so good (really need to get an external mic for this stuff...) but it definitely went in a different direction...

technically, similar place as before. Lots of weird replace stuff (I'm going to keep toying with this til it just becomes part of the way I play music. It's getting there, and I've been surprised at how quickly it's got musical...)

The big difference here is that I'm playing my 4 string fretted bass - very different beast to the fretless 6.. different sound, feel, vibe, options...

So it starts with an F7sus (in case you want to play along) and proceeds in a sort of F minorly manner, getting pretty freaky on the way, and very dark and heavy at the end.

enjoy!

Sounding hip, Steve. I like the 'darker' stuff- it seems more substantive. Whether it is or not is a matter of perspective, I guess.

    Thanks Steve.

It's an interesting point, and one I consciously avoid taking on board, partly because I think it's very much a musician thing to hear music that is theoretically and technically more obtuse as somehow deeper... With instrumentalists, I often feel the same way you do. With singer/songwriters, the opposite is true, the simpler more naive stuff connects better... So I'll still spend a lot of my time trying to get the simpler stuff to say what I want it to say... :)

it's a tough balancing act, for sure.

Love the 'darker' side experiment. After over 20 years of playing, I'm still amazed by how time of day can change a playing vibe. I mean, I know this… subtle differences to mood and so on… each part of the environment adding to the creative whole. I hear your discoveries and intent, even if I listen back on a bright, sunny morning. Wonderful!

thanks Darren, We'll see how much of it makes it onto the next album. There are a couple of really dark tracks on Grace And Gratitude, and lots on the Lessons Learned From An Aged Feline series...

'proper' recording should start in the next month :)

    Can’t wait to hear more!

I'm looking for some ‘ambient’ (and I use that word cautiously) music to get me through my day-to-day design work but also something to listen to while I write (novels, shorts… mainly science-fiction). Do you have any recommendations from your catalogue?

Hi Darren - have a listen to last.fm/music/Steve+Lawson/Lessons+Learnt+From+An+Aged+Feline+Pt+I - it's a free download, the hugely long tracks in particular are v. ambient. :) Hope you enjoy it.

After that, check out Grace And Gratitude...

Excellent! I'm sure I will pick up most, if not all, of your work eventually but thanks for those pointers :)

Steve - scratch the fluffy surface and you're a goth. Therefore you're drawn to the "dark side". Nuff said.
