(brief excerpt from original 4 min looped video)
This body extension is constructed from nylon pantyhose and polyester fill with protruding tentacles that resemble ambiguous genitalia. While it was initially intended as a sculptural object, I staged a performance by wearing it in a swimming pool. The prosthetics were intended to appear to give me superhuman ability but when worn underwater, they dangerously inhibited movement.
During the recording of the performance, I shared the pool with a competitive swim team who, for unknown reasons, physically collided with me at one point. I suspected that my presence was not welcome in their practice area, or they refused to deviate from their determined course. I was delighted to include this “mistake” - the collision between human and beast - as part of the narrative because it appears as though the beast is ravaging or consuming the swimmer. A predator/prey conflict played out as issues of power, territorial negotiation, uniforms and uniformity, freakishness and alienation were tantamount in this work.
