18. Canon Rebel T1i : My First Try
I shot this video in 720p30 using only available light and without any stabilizers or tripods. Nothing was staged or planned, just like your uncle would do with this camera. I used a Sigma 10-20mm 4-5.6 and a 30mm 1.4. I color corrected the video, so yes, it is not the original colors (it's an addiction I have...).

I am planning on shooting a few other videos with the T1i, but this time using a tripod, a Glidecam and a ModoSteady. Stay tuned!

Enjoy!

nice video. especially enjoyed the skateboard and the wide lens. i did something very similar this weekend with my new 500D. i've got the same 2 sigma lenses you used, but for my clip i used a couple of small manual lenses (28mm & 50mm) to lock in the aperture.

what software did you use to edit/colour grade?
  • Thanks John. I used Sony Vegas to edit and After Effects to color grade (using only the built in FX). What do you mean by small manual lenses? Lenses with an aperture ring?
  • john lewis 7 months ago
yeah, little old lenses from the 2nd hand store with aperture rings, manual focus and a screw on mount.
the 28mm is particularly small, sitting only about an inch out from the camera body. i like small :)

Very impressive quality. I thought the T1i had a limit at 15fps, but maybe that's at 1080? Can you tell me if it's AVCHD (.mts) files the T1i produces, how many mbps, and what experience you have in editing it?

I'm using a Canon HF10 at 17mbps with mts files, and it's manageable, but you need a computer with some 'force' to edit.
  • In 1080, the limit is 20fps. In 720 it's 30 fps. The files are H264 Quicktime movies (.mov). The editing was fine using Sony Vegas. I would recommend converting your files to an uncompressed format to optimize the editing process.

    Quicktme says it's 26.65 mbps.

This was one of the nicer T1i films I have seen here. Very well done. I also edit in Vegas. Although I have a new GH1 ordered I am very impressed with the quality of your film. I would have liked to save it.
  • Thank you Roger. I did this video especially for guys like you!

Looks just like the 5D Mark II, which isn't surprising. I hope they upgrade the firmware with a 720p option. Converting from 1080p takes a while.
  • At least you get 30fps... not a strange 20fps hehe!

I didn't expect that !!! Amazing quality, shot with this camera ... and ... if this is your "first try", I am looking forward to your works in the future ;-)))

    Thanks for sharing it.
  • Thanks James! Come back here in a few days or weeks, I should have a new video with the T1i.

Another thanks for sharing. Good song, too. Much better than someone standing around panning at a bunch of ducks on the ground. Probably a little better photography than your uncle could pull off, however! I'm not sure I'd take my T1i skateboarding...
  • Thanks JVo. Share it! Sadly, there are too many useless videos like you described...

Nice. I just bought the same camera. I'd be scared to death to put it so close to the ground, though.

Splendide! Ca me rassure sur le potentiel de cette camera lorsqu'on y met un peu de travail.

    Tu l'as achetée où ?

I was wondering the same thing as the person above, where in Quebec did you buy your camera and for what price?
  • Bestbuy (or Futureshop) for 1099$ + tax
Photoservice has a better price I think, but when I bought mine it was not available yet.

Wow man... really impressive. Can't wait for more! I ordered my T1i last Friday. CAN'T WAIT TO GET MY HANDS ON IT! Keep the good videos coming! BTW, what song is that?
  • Thanks! Look at the end of the video for the song, I'm too lazy to type it hehe :)

What shots are closer to 24fps Hollywood movies? 20fpd or 30fps...I just want to know how many fps look better in the video?
  • 30fps IMO. 20fps looks weird!

hi. I really liked your opening sequence. It was incredibly awesome. If you didn't mind could you tell me how it was done. and maybe even send me the project file if it was AE. I don't want to steal your ideas. i just wanted to see how you did it. it would only be for personal use.

I'm learning AE and almost fluent with the program.
  • Thank you Kush. I am preparing my new website and will probably include a tutorial concerning this intro. I will let you know!

Very nice work. I find editing the files right off the camera demands a lot of resources on even my new computer. What do you convert it to when you edit? and how do you keep HD when you're uploadign to youtube?

I have Sony Vegas Studio and would like to know your workflow.
  • Thanks! I haven't found a good workflow yet. I converted the files from the camera into uncompressed AVI files. They are huge, but editable!

To upload on youtube, simply upload a 1280*720 video using quicktime to create a H264 file.

Nice! The wide is the best way to shoot vids on SLR's I think, narrow DOF helps to not always be focus grinding.

This is one of the best videos shot using the T1i. Not too much rolling shutter effect in this one despite much of the fast motion you were filming. Nice color correction too, albeit, somewhat over saturated, although I tend to grade my stuff that way too.
  • Thanks man! Yes a bit over saturated, it was done very quickly!

Fantastic video. I think I'm going to buy that camera, but I will have to find a way to fix manual settings. I think the best way is to just hack firmware :) It efforts time but it's better than buying 7D :)
  • Let me know if you succeed :)

Great, great stuff man. I really like what you did with the colors. and by the way, you have an excellent opening title sequence! was that made in after effects?
  • Thanks Peter! Yes it was done in After Effects.

Oh, awesome video. I heard T1i only shoots in 30 fps. While you were skating or kept the camera fixed somehow, it was really awesome, while walking we can se the low fps shit :\
Anyway, you did it outstanding. Btw, the colors look really professional, like a real movie.
Did u just set the RGB curves? What else?

    Hugs
