This video is an educational tool produced through the support of an international development project called the Women's Legal Rights Initiative. It was created to help disseminate information about the country of Benin’s Family Code, which, among other things, prohibits polygamy. It tells the fictional story of a schoolgirl in Benin who is pursued by an older, married man. Although the man knows that Benin’s Family Code prohibits polygamy, he promises the girl that he will make her his second wife. She becomes pregnant, and complications ensue. The video is 45 minutes long and in Fon (the most commonly spoken local language in Benin) with French subtitles. The Women's Legal Rights Initiative was funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development's Office of Women in Development. The person who submitted this video works for the Office of Women in Development and was asked by the office to post the video online so people could easily access it and learn about Benin’s Family Code.
