The new Star Trek movie begs the question, Can you parachute from space? Of course you can (orbit is another matter - you'll need to either eliminate your orbital velocity or carry a robust heat shield).
50 years ago this fall, Project Excelsior proved you CAN jump from space. Over several jumps, Joe Kittinger demonstrated how a high-altitude pilot could abandon his craft and live to tell the tale.
