More than half a million women across the globe die each year due to complications in pregnancy and childbirth. In India the proportion of girls to boys surviving infancy has declined since 1901. In China the one-child policy begun in 1979 has caused a dramatic rise in infant mortality for girls. In the current global economic recession, women's lower employment rates, weaker control over property and resources, and concentration in vulnerable forms of employment and less social protection have all resulted in a higher global unemployment rate for women over men.
