This 3D volume shows neurons and a blood vessel in the optic tectum of a larval zebrafish loaded with activity-indicator dye. It was captured with light field microscopy (stanford.edu/~tanders/blog/) and processed using a statistical technique called independent component analysis to find a group of regions which were highly-variable across time while also uncorrelated with each other. The calculated regions, called "components" or "sources", were then volume-rendered using the blend mode of the Imaris 3D rendering package.
