NEW Silver Cloud Installation @ The Andy Warhol Museum
6 months ago
Our permanent installation "Silver Clouds" have been repainted black for "Warhol Live" an exhibition exploring Dance and Music in the works of Andy Warhol. The new black backdrop is reminiscent of Merce Cunningham's "RainForest" which utilized Silver Clouds in its set design.
Warhol Live runs from June 13th, 2009 - September 13th, 2009.
Silver Clouds:
By 1966 Andy Warhol had supposedly given up painting and was actively producing films and promoting The Velvet Underground rock group in a multimedia spectacle called the "Exploding Plastic Inevitable" at the Dom, a Polish community center on St. Mark's Place in New York's East Village.
At this moment, he had his second exhibition with Leo Castelli, the doyen of contemporary art dealers in New York. For this event, Warhol created an environment which included one room simply covered with Cow wallpaper and an adjoining one filled with Silver Clouds, which were made of a metalized plastic film inflated with helium. They were made with the assistance of Billy Kluver, an engineer and one of the founders of Experiments in Art and Technology (E.A.T.)
After seeing the Silver Clouds at Leo Castelli’s gallery, the avant-garde choreographer Merce Cunningham invited Warhol to adapt the work for a new dance piece. RainForest premiered in 1968, with choreography by Cunningham, music by David Tudor, set by Warhol, and costumes by Jasper Johns. Although Cunningham was undoubtedly drawn to Silver Clouds’ random, free-floating quality and they complemented the piece which featured six dancers whose movements were meant to evoke forest creatures in a dark woods. However, the Clouds soon proved to be too tempermental and were tethered to the floor for later performances.
