Short, but I think good example of what this little cam (HF S10) can do, not very far from bigger brother,
tell me where is HF S10 and where is A1,
and I can tell you that EX1 is at the very end of the sample
Thanks for watching :)

every second shot is A1 right? The video is much smoother

no, other way around, front camera is A1, right side is S10,
    nice , ah?

Wow if thats the case, it looks to me as if the S10 is slightly better! (Just my opinion) What settings on the S10 did you use to shoot?
  • paramon plus 2 years ago
Originally i wasn't planning to use the footage from S10
and it was rolling just in case, so it was on Portrait, which is basically auto, but after I saw the result, I might use it for DVD I'm making :)

Thanks Paramon for all of your videos. they look really very great. Is this one is also shot with MB looks ? By the way may I ask you what is "MB looks" and how to set it up with the HF S10 ?

Good footage Paramon. Is the HFS 10 better than the XHA1??? In this test, you bet ya. Clearly the EX1 is in another league, but the other two is a real surprise.
  • paramon plus 2 years ago
    Is it better? no i don't think so, but ridiculously close, and considering price tags on both, i would be selling my A1, but I already did that long time ago, right after I tried EX1;
    Thanks for watching,
    :)

I think another big thing with this is the difference between the A1 and EX1. The colours, vibrancy & definition is miles apart.

Im totaly sold by the HF-S10 (100). It will be my next camera. Paramon, where can I find an apropriate lens hood for HF-s10?
  • paramon plus 2 years ago
I don't use any, but I guess you will put UV filter on, so any 58mm lens hood will fit,

Thank you paramon! Ordered an HFS100 today. I have been watching your videos and they have been very helpful. Yes I will also keep my EX1, yet this camera will travel with me all the time. I purchased a Sanyo Xacti HD2000 a couple weeks back and the video jitters, I have tried everything and it is still poor. Your video with the VPC FH1 - you stated it was very windy that day, ok - but I can see the "Sanyo jitter" in that camera as well. Must be something with the Sanyo, even on a tripod the video will still jitter and it gets REAL bad with the image stabilization on.

    Thanks again!

    P.S. I have a brand new Sanyo Xacti HD2000 for sale :-)

I have shot some stage performance with HF S100 and so I felt a familiarity and guessed correctly(key word guessed) --that said, the price difference doesn't compensate the very minor difference in performance betw 100 and A1 as far as this and other comparisons you've posted --

how far from stage were the camera's? appearance is about 20-25 feet, and that could be why portrait setting wotked so well here -- I recently shot a stage presentation using a variety of settings, but I was about 100 feet from stage, and the lighting and background were brighter and more reflective -- in that situation the Auto/Fluorescent2 WB setting worked the best -- one caveat tho' i was standing on a chair and had to hold the camera up & away from my body to get over audience heads, and there was some shaking --even a little bit sometimes has a big influence especially in more challenging settings

BTW I have also mentioned yellowish look to HF S100 video, but white balancing does remove that, sometimes it requires a setting you wouldn't think -- I shot a parade in cloudy weather, and again the auto/fluorescent2 WB setting showed the best results --go figure

anyway, your excellent and helpful Camcorder Public Service Video is always very helpful
  • paramon plus 2 years ago
    Many thanks!
In my case HF was 15 feet max from the stage no zoom, and A1 was about 50 - 60 feet back and half way zoomed, that might give a slight excuse to A1, but still, HF Sx is just unbeatable price/value combination,
thanks again for the nice words,
    :)

    Hi

Is the following SDHC card OK for the Canon HF S10?

SanDisk SDHC ULTRA II 32GB Card - Class 2

Many thanks for all the hard work you have put in.

I'm just in the process of buying the HF S10.
  • paramon plus 2 years ago
    Hey Charlie,
I'm not sure if class 2 going to work, never tried,
all my cards are class 4, I can ntell it works for sure, and I think it's a min. for 24 Mb/sec data rate.

    Thanks for reply paramon.

    So class 4 and 6 are OK - yes/no?

Do I need to go higher than 8GB

    See: mymemory.co.uk/SDHC/SanDisk/SanDisk-Extreme-III-SDHC---Class-6

    I can't find a class 4 or 6 16GB/32GB

Any SDHC recommendation would be greatly appreciated?

Much appreciated for taking the time to reply.

I love your video clips - keep at it!

    Hi Paramon,

I am a new comer on Vimeo. Your videos are really great. Is this one is also shot with "MB looks" ? What is "MB looks" and how to set it up on the HF S10 ? Thanks again.
  • paramon plus 2 years ago
    Thnaks Chau,
no, I never color grade any comparison footage, that would be misleading,
you don't shoot with MB Looks,
MB Looks is a plugin application for the video editor of your choice, that gives you ability to apply multiple filters and other enhancements to your original footage during editing. You can get more info @

The HFS footage looked slightly richer than A1.

Of course the EX blew them both out of the water.

    :)
  • paramon plus 2 years ago
could be because of the picture profile settings on the A1, but generally speaking I compared some other A1 footage with HF S10, sometimes I don't believe my eyes; EX1 footage not for comparison, just as a point of reference :)

This helps as I am considering the EX1.

Tomorrow I am sending back the TM300. Even though it allowed better low light performance VS the HF S100 at 60i 0db AWB and the picture quality suffered at low light once the gain increased.
  •
  • mayer chalom 2 years ago
even with the compressed web version you can see that the ex1 is sharper than the other two cams. I think I will be returning my hv30 for the hfs100 soon. The hfs100 manual gain feature is what is really dragging me towards it.
  •
  • radon jean 2 years ago
The wider shoot are from the EX1, the medium is the HF-S10 and the "portrait" (more zoom) is the XH-A1, rigth ?

Without doubt, XH-A1 and HFS10 looks similar in this sample.

For this kind of static shoot, did you try Reflex machines, such as Canon 500D, or Nikon D5000, or Panasonic GH1 ? Those machine could be good for this kind of shoot, no ?
  • paramon plus 2 years ago
they could, I got myself 5D MKii, but there 12 minutes single clip limitation, and it doesn't start to record new one unless you push the button, so no unattended camera option :)

Hi paramon i'd like to hear your advise i own and hv30 and let me tell you taht i'm stunnig with the quality a futures of the S10 or S100 i don't know if i should get the s10 or s100 for $279 difference..... It will be woth it? please......

    Thanks
  •
  • radon jean 2 years ago
For the price difference, with exactly the same machine except the embedded flash memory, the price is NOT justified... A card cost 30$ not more. So you save 249$ ($279-30$), or you can buy lots of memory cards for the same price

OK, so I am so disturbed. Does the Canon HF-S10's video look plasticky? (What the heck does plasticky mean anyways?)

I read somewhere that CMOS sensors produce "plastic-like" videos, while CCD produce more "film-like" videos.

So, does the HF-S10's quality look plasticky? Thanks!
  • paramon plus 2 years ago
the purpose of the video was to show how close $1200 this year model camcorder is close to the 4K and 3 years old model prosumer camera,
I like CCD better, just for the global shutter, but it's dead, I mean no more CCD production, all manufacturers are going CMOS (with economy in mind).
CCD produces more film like videos? take a look at the 5D mkii footage, if that is not film like, I don't know what is,
    how that for plasticky:))
    thanks for watching:)

  • Kurvine Chua 2 years ago
Oh, and which among these two camcorders have the better video quality: The HF S10 or the HF20? I read somewhere that the HF20's quality is way better. I find this hard to believe. Any opinions?
  • paramon plus 2 years ago
looking at the specs, and to my eye HF S10/100 has better resolution and overall image looks sharper with more details, but the low light performance is so much better on HF S10/100 due to a larger lens and sensor, so I would recommend to upgrade if it fits the budget,
    thanks for watching :)
  • Kurvine Chua 2 years ago
Oh, OK. Thanks so much So, you've seen the video from the HF20 as well? And, from what you have observed, the HF S10 is much more sharper and has a better resolution when compared to the HF20? Is this correct? Again, thank you!!
  • mayer chalom 2 years ago
the hf20 is the worst canon consumer cam. It doesn't have a manual focus ring, it has 1/4'' cmos sensor vs the 1/2.6 of the hfs100/10. There is no gain control, peaking, or zebras on the hf20. the hf10 is a much better cam than the hf20 imho. BTW tapeless isn't what its cracked up to be. Why would accept lower quality footage for tapeless (especially when it takes usually longer to import footage than realtime tape). The only tapeless cam that i could reccomend is the canon hfs100/10 which is on par for the hv20/30/40 (i like it better because it has manual gain very important). I used to have an hv30 and shot with it but sold it and bought an hfs100 (the image quality is really the same, but i have manual gain so no stupid light trick to get rid of gain lol).

    I just posted 4 a few reasons:
    1) THANKS to all of you for you videos and comments etc.
    2) I just bought an HFS10 in Japan last weekend after LOTSA thinking and reading on here

I know some Japanese (was there visiting wife's family) and was relieved that the S10's on screen menus could be displayed in English.

Just got back to Australia, have downloaded an English manual, but there's no mention of the best way to connect to a Mac.

Anyone able to give me a few quick hints?

I have FCP 5.0.4 which I use with my old DV cams, but I guess it's not the best version to be using for the new camera.

a link to a "How To" would be handy.

Once again, thanks so much for your reviews, feedback thoughts etc.

I was SUPER RETICENT about moving from the safety (?) of having BOXES of tapes and not relying on computers, external drives etc after I film a band (still am I must admit).

I hope I haven't made a mistake. There's never a better time than the present to get organised I spose !

I film A LOT of bands and have FINALLY moved to a better quality cam - too late i gotta say, but hey, it's a hobby...... glad i can FINALLY have at least ONE camera with stunning pic quality....
  • mayer chalom 2 years ago
The hfs100 is a great cam except you can't use the cam in final cut 5.04. You need to upgrade and buy the latest final cut (final cut pro 7 an upgrade which costs 300 dollars). By the way i assume that you have an old machine so your import times will be longer than tape (realtime). In retrospect for your system the hv20/30/40 might have been a better choice honestly. Its a great cam i have an hv30 and an hfs10.
  • paramon plus 2 years ago
you can buy neoscene ($100) and convert heavy AVCHD, there is no quality loss,
I am a PC guy and I use neoscene for converting AVCHD and 5D2 clips, makes RT editing easy
  •
  • Andrew Plowright 2 years ago
I'm wondering how people on here "archive" or save your recordings.

i.e. do you import them using FCP every time you shoot?

or do you "drag and drop" or copy the folders from the HFS10 onto a hard drive?

the reason i'm asking is that I haven't yet bought the latest FCP, or FC Studio. I guess I will have to purchase it soon, but I think I should first upgrade my MacBook Pro as it has only 2.16GHz Processor and 2 GB of memory.

I shot a band a few weeks back and have "archived" the gig onto a hard drive by copying ALL of the folders on the Canon over to an external Hard Drive.

do you think this will enable me to watch/edit at a later date?

I haven't yet erased it from the camera, but will need to do so in about a week as I have 4 band performances to shoot in about a week and a half.

I know i should go out and buy a new iMac with 4GB of RAM and the new Final Cut Studio, but that's pretty bloody extravagant in dollar terms.

    Any hints?

By the way paramon: using the above method to copy the data from the camera, could i drag / import the mts files from the folder on my external drive INTO neoscene for the conversion you mention ?

I guess what I'm trying to ask out of all this is:

can i just copy from the camera and paste into a folder so i can mess around playing / editing later...?
  • paramon plus 2 years ago
    Absolutely,
I don't copy all files, i just need MTS, and later i convert them using neoscene, amd I amd a PC guy,
    thanks for watching :)
  •
  • Andrew Plowright 2 years ago
    i bought Neoscene.

    seems to work great.

i gotta determine the best settings to maintain FULL quality.

what do you guys do for these settings:

    Image processing during conversion:
    - telecine removal (24p extraction from 60i)
    - deinterlacing (30p/25p from 60i/50i)

any hints ? a dummies guide for telecine and deinterlacing ?
  • paramon plus 2 years ago
I am not crazy about 24p, but I don't like interlaced also, so 30p works great for me,
    thanks for watching :)
  •
  • AVCHD User 2 years ago
Did you use WB presets on all cameras or did you manually balance them? I cannot imagine how do you balance cameras in "colored" light.

Did you shoot in 24p? In this mode the HF-S gets additional stop and a half of sensitivity compared to 60i, and it looks like this pretty much evens the game with the A1. Interesting. The TM300 should not be far behind, no more than half a stop in 24p mode, thus the HMC40 should be the same. On the other hand, I've read that the HMC40 is about 3 stops slower than the HMC150, which is about as fast as the A1. You say that the HF-S is usable, others say that the HMC40 is unusable, but it should be at most half-stop slower. My head hurts.
  • paramon plus 2 years ago
    HF S10 was on tungsteen preset;
A1 and EX1 were on custom from the white wall
    al was shot in 30p;
    it is really hard to compare by the specs only, I think you need to try the real thing;
I did and got myself HF S,
    thanks for watching :)

I borrowed a HF-s10 for one night and put my Xh-A1 on Ebay the next day. There is actually no comparison. The Xh-A1 has all the hardware we are used to..connectors etc, but even the MV-20/30 are better than it, and the HF-s10/100 are better than that. There is no way to configure the 27 menu settings on the Xh-A1 to look even nearly as good as a HF-S10. I tried..and I'm a broadcast engineer.
Single chip is the new three-chip. One more product cycle and they will match the low-light sensitivity and add the connectors and controls. It won't be in a DSLR.
  • paramon plus 2 years ago
    Isn't that amazing?
so it wasn't just me, cuz i thought no way this litlle camera has better picture than prosumer camcorder,
but a few years between release dates make a big difference :)
This year HF Sx will have 3,5 LCD,
    I love that!

i have recently converted a bunch of my HFS's .MTS files to .mov files using Neoscene and for some stupid reason, 3 out of 10 conversions have SUPER buzz through the audio.

you can KINDA hear the proper audio, but basically it just sounds like a swarm of bees.

    anyone know why?

    the picture plays perfectly

and another issue, the camera automatically creates a new MTS file after 11:20 sec

this invariably happens in the middle of a song.

when I then import the Converted files Mov files into Final Cut Pro I get a distortion of the video as the playhead passes from one file to the next.

i'm laying down the audio track and playing the video over the top of it, so when that wobble between video files occurs, the video also goes out of synch with the audio track.

    any hints.

i'm starting to get pretty annoyed with my decision to buy this stupid camera with all these idiosyncracies.
