beautiful beautiful stuff here. What were your settings and how much color correction did you do in post?
  • Thanks. For a majority of the shots, I used "Cinemode", and adjusted the exposer if it necessary. The shots with the snow falling, I used "TV/Shutter Priority" mode with a 1/2000 shutter speed, exposer was again adjusted if needed.

As for color correction I mainly; desaturated slightly, lowered the blacks and mids, and added "Levels", giving most of the shots the slightest amount of green/yellow.
  • james curtis 2 years ago
Wow, great information, as I'm still getting used to the quirks of my HV20. Brilliant work however.
  • Nicholas Quesada 1 year ago
when you say added "levels" what do you mean.... do mean just adding the green/yellow on color correction.
  •
  • This was really good, what program did you use to encode and export this?
  • I used Apple Compressor.
    As for settings, I used:
    H.264
    ACC Audio 48.000 kHz
    1440 x 1080(to keep the file small)
    aspect ratio HDV 1080i (16:9)

do u prefer compressor over just using the qtime conversion in fcp... I never tinkered around with anything in final cut studio except for motion...

I really really love that shot at 15 seconds. such a beautiful shot. even though it is a photograph, it is still beautiful.

Wow, it looks so good! It looks like a commercial. A really high quality commercial. The snow is lovely.

I also love the use of Sigur Rós. Njosnavelin is a beautiful song.
  • Yes, Sigur Ros is a great band, their music is so comforting.

amazing. How'd you get that great shallow focus?

Is there a 35mm adaptor on this?

This might be the best hv20 footage i've seen.
  • Thanks! For many of the shots, the camera was fairly close to the object. I just zoomed in the slightest bit and dialed the focus.

No 35mm was used, just a stock HV20.
  • Ayz Waraich 2 years ago
crazy. the chess pieces especially have a great shallow focus look. I'm still blown away by how cool this camera can be. Been playing around with mine all day and realizing how powerful it is.

But yeah -- You should post this on the forums at hv20.com. I think everyone there would dig it. Great job.

This was just the stock HV20??? no lens?... That camera is pretty amazing.

i've have been considering the hv20 for a few weeks now, and boy oh boy you have just made me realise that i have got to do this. amazing amazing footage you got here
  • Thanks!!
You should definitely get an HV20. You can buy all sorts of accessories for it. And if you haven't read about it, you can even make/buy a 35mm adapter for it, kind of costly, but from what I've seen, amazing results.
  • Nicholas Quesada 1 year ago
i want a 35mm adapter so bad for my hv20!!!!

This may be a first test, but it is not the first time you have made a movie. VERY NICE WORK! I like it alot. What did you use to edit your piece?
  • Thanks! And yeah, it's just my first test with this camera.
I used Final Cut Express 3.5

    awesome mate!

I want to get into these kind of things but.. man.. no time +)
how much footage did you capture, you think? Did you have something in mind and shot these things clip after clip or did you shoot many long shots and then found what you liked and edited?
That's the hardest thing for me.. Because I don't know whether I should shoot bit by bit or just have many long footages and edit it

    Neways, great job!!! GOd bless!
  • In all I probably got like 10 minutes of footage. A lot was cut out/down.
Generally each shot was about 10-15 seconds long, with an exception of a few. I didn't know what song I was going to use at first, but I found this one and the footage fit perfectly. So I decided to shoot some more footage to fill in the gaps.
  • KD 2 years ago
    thx for the reply, mate

If you don't mind, how did you capture the video into the mac ? (I'm assuming it's different from pc but I do it with hvsplit, virtualdub, etc.) How long did it take you to render??? Mine seem to take AGES!! maybe the codec I'm trying to encode in?.... My videos lag and are huge when I do it in any of the lossless format... hmmm
  • I used Final Cut Express via a Firewire cable.

It took I think maybe 20-30 minutes total. I was surprised HD footage didn't take longer than that.

My video is always huge too when I try to play it in Quicktime, but I just full-screen it or half-size it usually to watch.
And usually I encode as .mov with standard HDV1080i codec.
  • KD 2 years ago
Final cut... man.. I miss apple days +)....

I still can't get a good image out. It's a tedious process with the PC. Maybe I'm just stupid... lol

Anyways, cheers!!!! thanks alot for the info! Also, for a very inspirational upload

    awesome , did u shoot 24p or 60i?
  • 60i

  • Jesse Granados 2 years ago
i went out to get my hands on the HV20 and boy it was so awesome!
overall how complicated is it to manage when first get it? im planning to spend a week non stop just tweaking the thing...
when u import it into you PC, what do u mean when u encode it, or downsize from 1080 to 720?
  • It shouldn't take long at all to get used to the camera.

For Vimeo, I think I kept this video at 1080, but there still was some quality loss with the final upload. By encoding it I just export it from my video editing software, saving it as a more compatible and smaller file size to upload to the web. So sites like Youtube, it won't really matter if you "lessen" the quality to 720 from 1080 beacuse YouTube formats it as a flash file anyways, so it would never look as good as it doesn't on your computer.
  • Nicholas Quesada 1 year ago
vimeo supports up to 720p you optimize it for that or you could let vimeo work its magic.
  •
  • Jesse Granados 2 years ago
Ah! i okay, well thank you i should be getting my camera very soon! time to say good bye to my crappy minidv and hello to Mini HDV! lol

Holy God, you've got some skill. You know your way around a camera. I need this camera. Anyhow i'd like to see some of your films, do you have any posted some where?
  • Well I have some videos up on YouTube. All shot with my older camera, with an exception of this video.

  • Maz1878 2 years ago
    what aspect ratio that?
  • HDV 1080i (16:9)
I also added a letterbox to it with a pre-set setting
    of "Panavision 2.35:1".
  •
  • Jesse Granados 2 years ago
How did u do the panavision letterbox?

and another question: i was just testing my editor and how do u change the format of the video so it could be uploaded to certain sites that need a certain format? u use final cut right?

0:28 to 0:40, the camera moves from top to down is awesome!!!!! and then the cat stare!!!

How do you get the shallow DOF, I am trying hard on my HF10.
  • thank you!
zooming in on the subject and/or getting really close to the subject does the job for me.
  • Mohamed Hafeez plus 9 months ago
Your footage is such an inspiration to me :-) Today I tried with the subject (a rose) very close and got awesome DOF. But if I try to do that with a subject little away, then somehow the DOF is not shallow at all. I zoomed in to an electric post, focussed it, zoomed out (with aperture totally open) but not much effect. Anyway I am trying!!! Thankx Karl.
  • no problem! just keep trying and experimenting, only good can come out of it

After watching this, it was the deciding factor between HV20/HF10. Is there a 50i tv mode on the HV20?
  • mine has 60i tv mode, since it is NTSC, but i assume you are looking for a PAL version, then yes, it does have 50i tv mode.
  • Paul Shmelov 6 months ago
oh, and do you know how to lock the white balance(exposure)? When you change zoom/angle it adjusts the brightness.
  • click the joystick in, and scroll down one to EXP. aim the camera in your scene wherever you want it to be locked, and press up, you can adjust it manually from there, brighter or darker.
it makes the footage look far more professional without changes in brightness when you zoom and angle it differently.
  • Paul Shmelov 6 months ago
Thanks, I was looking for some special tab that said "lock"
