When my good friend and previous collaborator Spoek Mathambo told me he was going to Kenya to work on an EP with Sauti Sol, I immediately began developing a documentary narrative that aimed to explore and unpack the notion of “new music” as a genre through the collaborative efforts of Spoek Mathambo and Sauti Sol. Over the course of 10 days, I filmed Spoek and Sauti in studio as they cooked an EP that endeavored to live up to the standards this ever-allusive genre called “new music” demanded.
