I like how this application encourages children to work together. Even though the maths is simple, they rely on each other to be successful.

Interestingly what tends to happen is one person from the group takes the lead and directs others. Not something they are told to do, but some just take charge and solve the question quickly and instructs others what to do.

Such a group dynamic makes users passive or active, so it is possible that children don't engage with the maths directly but engage with the person who tells them what to do.

I have seen this application being used by lots of groups of different children and a leader always emerges.

Thanks for posting these videos demonstrating the use of a SMART Table in the classroom.

In this activity you mention that a leader always emerges - would this be true for younger aged children? And does the emerged 'leader' also demonstrate a high or higher level of ability in Maths or a dominant personality within groups?

In a way a leader has to emerge so that their collaboration has some sort of direction and structure. I am going to ask some groups to try it without saying anything to each other, or indeed a conch style rotation of a single person who can speak so that all children get a chance to lead.

It does invariably end up with the person with that combination: strong maths and strong personality - that leads.

Not sure yet about the way a younger group of children would respond to this activity.
