8. Steadicam Merlin w/35mm adapter & HV20 (Snow, just snow)
It's quite a challenge to achieve these shots. I have to learn to balance the Merlin from scratch. I also have to trim the Merlin every time I adjust focus. The focal distance is at 50mm which amplifies the shake.
The image on the LCD is upside down...and lastly, it is -16C outside.

It's really the wind that affects the balance of the Steadicam.

P mode. No color correction. Everything set in Auto (except focus of course)

Beautiful shots. I especially enjoyed the "blinking eye" transition.

I really like the music choice... captured the winter nicely. I also admire your bravery for staying out in the cold for the shots... have you considered doing the LCD flip 'hack' with the ribbons?
  • twoneil 2 years ago
Yup, I tried the flip hack. Though, I damaged the ribbons just a month ago. I'm taking the next step and solder the wires inside. BTW, I'm impressed with the camera surviving in the cold, snow and moisture.

Me too! I had it out in 10-20F weather on my side for nearly a week as I ventured the Grand Canyon... it certainly proved its dependability.

Nice shots... quite impressive use of the Merlin. And your 35mm adapter is REALLY good, no loss of light and no loss of contrast, very impressed.

This honesty, Twoneil, is the first flight + adapter footage I have seen. It is still a bit bouncey, but as you said having a 50mm lens certainly doesn't work for your stabilizer, thats for sure. Overall I am impressed although for narrative purposes I think I will stick with my Jib and Dolly. I have always been back and forth about camera stabilizers but I cant justify the money for even the cheaper ones.

you slowed down the speed with twixtor? do you have rougth rushes with the steadycam ?

Thanks for the clip! The video here is astonishing to me. I can't imagine anything like this was even possible back when the first dvx demo cams were being passed around. Here we have 35mm DOF adapters, steadicams, and 24p in high definition. Unbelievable! I wanted to see your footage in black and white, because I think this looks closest to 16mm b&w that I've seen, and was pleased with the way it looks. Any chance you can go through all the trouble with some human faces/actors thrown in?

Are the "darker" areas on the edges caused by the 35mm adapter? Nicely done, sir.
  • Eylem Caner 10 months ago
Yes, it's called vignetting and can be avoided by just zooming in a tiny miny bit more. Might causes a 0,1 or so multiplier, but since you can add vignette in post, it's better to capture a frame without one. But these parts i'm sure were not seen on the lcd, which means that when you can't see them in the lcd, just zoom in a bit more.

Man... You're not just making me an extraordinary adapter. But you're inspiring me too!!

Which Canon 50mm are you using?

is your steadicam handheld or harness based? very smooth!
  • twoneil 2 years ago
    It's handheld
  • LCF 2 years ago
wow - must have been hard to achieve these shots with the 35mm off the front heh

Hi twoneil, i could not put my 35mm adapter (letus mini)on the merlin. too much weight on front. how did you made this without a telephoto lens support?
  • twoneil 2 years ago
I don't know how much the Letus Mini weighs, but this adapter is very light. Hence, I could easily balance it on the Merlin.

    It's about 200g.

  • steadicem plus 2 years ago
hv30 and letus together 1800 g. i will try manfrotto 293 telephoto lens support. it may works. then i will post some shots

    thanks
  • twoneil 2 years ago
Good move. You should be able to easily achieve the center of gravity of your rig. The HV20 Letus Mini is still very light compared to a big camera & Letus Extreme.

this is just amazing!! l loved 00:52 where the snow falls off the roof :]
that Merlin is just a blessing! although its SO Expensive [800$?] its still affordable for consumers...somehow :] upgrading your work in like 10 level up! :]

did u use twixtor there, btw? :]
  • twoneil 1 year ago
I though no one else would notice it :) you haven proven me wrong. Those details are just spectacular.

It's at 24p on normal speed. No slow MOs
  • eladbari 1 year ago
wow! so i guess the merlin just gives u a feeling of floating or something....it seems like it was in slow mo. :]
so how much does the Merlin goes for, these days? more or less?

oh..and p.s-what is it really that u have to master, at first, when u start using it? what happens if an untrained cameraman-uses the Merlin for the first time?
  • twoneil 1 year ago
Seems like the resale value sticks at the same price (just like the Steadicam JR)

1st, learn the concepts (the laws of physics & gravity), then practice. It takes at least a week to master it.

  • eladbari 1 year ago
wow! it seems like there is a Vest now, for the Merlin too?!

    still..pretty pricey.. :\
anyways,i bet after the stuff you can make with it, u just totally forget about the cost :]

awsome footage, really nice work with the steadycam, it does look like if it was in slow motion. Is this adapter static or vibrating?

How did you get rid of the chromatic abbreation? And how did you get rid of the vignetting?
