I was recently invited by Adobe to give a talk on my work — what I do and how I use its products — to staff at BBC Bristol in the UK. Part of the talk was devoted to the importance of playing with software and pursuing personal projects for fun. As an example I spent a couple of hours making this Zoetrope of the transit of Venus, partly as a homage to the groundbreaking natural history programming BBC Bristol are famous for and partly to see if it was possible to make a zoetrope in After Effects.
There are a lot of things I would do differently if I were to do this again, but that's the point of playing with personal projects.
UPDATE: I've since seen a better version of this idea, which was done before mine, by the awesome Scott Benson: vimeo.com/43452528
