Inside Development

Inside Development

Natalie Rodic

This 28 minute film explores contemporary issues of urban development by considering the inhabitants of a neighborhood as the experts of their community. INSIDE DEVELOPMENT is part of the first long-term evaluation of an internationally-financed development project thirty years after its inception. Significantly, Parcelles Assainies was the World Bank’s first urban development project. It was considered to be overly-ambitious and was the subject of enduring controversy between the government of Senegal, the World Bank, community leaders, and individuals. What is the face of Parcelles Assainies? How has an urban project become a place in the course of three generations?

Shot in Dakar, Senegal in 2006, created by Natalie Rodic with the support of the New School’s Graduate Program in International Affairs, this documentary examines the work of eight researchers and most importantly the community members of the Senegal Sites and Services project, Parcelles Assainies.
