11. Images Of Western Australia's Kimberley
2 years ago
Sorry guys, this is a bit of a long one. If you start the movie and then read my ramble it should be ready to watch.

I was fortunate enough to be invited aboard possibly the greatest adventure cruise boat in Australia if not the world. The boat for those of you who have not heard of it is the "TRUE NORTH" and it circumnavigates the Australian continent visiting some of the most remote coastline in Australia and also ventures past these waters to many unseen Pacific Island destinations.

"TRUE NORTH" is designed for pure adventure whilst providing a 5 star luxury platform for those hours not spent diving off spectacular coral atolls, catching elusive Barramundi, swimming in pristine waterholes, or taking in a cultural experience first hand.

All these things are achieved by the incredible design of the "True North" with its shallow water ability and possibly the coolest thing ever, the Bell 407 helicopter. I can only speak of my personal experience on the East Kimberley expedition, and from the moment I landed on the heli deck I was in awe of this amazing vessel.

True North cruises effortlessly through the maze of waterways of the Kimberley placing you in the most amazing locations to maximize your experience. For those locations that can only be visited by helicopter True North's skillful pilot Rob would place you precariously on the edge of an amazing waterfall for a picnic lunch like no other or take you to a waterhole full of Barra that have never seen a fisherman.

The icing on the cake for me was the crew of the True North. Without a doubt these guy's and gal's are a credit to the whole experience of adventure, luxury, comfort, and endless excitement. With 1 crew member for every 2 passengers every need was covered and nothing was left wanting.

I have never seen such an awesome place as the Kimberley and I hope you can get a small sense of what it is like to visit here from my video. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity for me and I must thank Mark and Craig for placing their faith in me to capture some amazing footage for them. I hope it can help in spreading the word about this amazing country and this truly unique experience.

"GO WILD IN STYLE" and check the boat for yourself at northstarcruises.com.au

For those of you interested more in how this was shot I used the following gear.

2 x Canon 5D MK2, Canon Prime lenses 24mm, 50mm, 85mm, 400mm, Miller Tripod, Lee Filter Kit with grads, Fostex field recorder, Rode Mics, (Sorry about the audio in the fishing segment. That was straight from the camera as I wanted to catch a fish so I didn't set up proper sound.)

Edited in Final Cut Pro

Music from "The Rabbit Proof fence" by Peter Gabriel
"The Thin Red Line" by Hans Zimmer

These guys know how to write film scores.

For those of you who are interested check out our website christianfletcher.com.au christianfletcher.wordpress.com

Thanks for being patient to wait and watch this. I think it is worth it.

Amazing, your videos are the best , bar none. And to think it was all shot on a Mark 2, is even more incredible.

Your very lucky to have been a part of it all!

    -Andrei
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
I am very lucky indeed Andrei. It was an amazing trip as the Kimberley is an amazing wilderness experience. The 5D held up well to the challenge. I have heaps more footage to use but could not fit any more in for fear of it ending up way too long. I'll have to do a sequel. Thanks for watching mate.

Michael! this is an amazing peace of work. You never seem to amaze me your compositions are fantastically composed, and the place is totally breath taken. I plan on shooting my first independent low budget feature film, and I would love to have you as my DP/CINEMATOGRAPHER the project. I also love the colors of all ur works. Mike u r an amazing talent with an amazing eye. I would seriously love to work with u in the near future.
    DWIGHT
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Thanks Dwight for your kind words. I'd love to help out as it's all good experience but Dunsborough is about as far away as you can get from the US. My budget doesn't allow me to travel that far. Oh well may be you can shoot it over here. Good luck with your project.

  • Dwight Gibson 2 years ago
Mike it's cool, I would pay for you to come over here, you are definitely worth it. Round trip and hotel accommodations. I would serious love to have you on board.
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Geepers!!! Thanks for the offer Dwight. I don't think I'd necessarily be good enough for what you have in mind. I tend to bluff my way around my productions and shooting to a script is something I haven't done much of.

What is the general idea of your film?
  •
  • Chas B 2 years ago
Mike Mike Mike yep you have done it again ... You do know the only way this video could be better is if God gave us 2 Mikes lol. Your work is such a breath of fresh air it really makes the senses water for more. Thank you for a real treat Mike.
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
God did make two of us. I am an identical twin. My bro Christian takes stills and his stuff will blow you away. He is doing the same trip to the Kimberley's in August. Keep an eye out on his blog if you want to see some really amazing stuff. christianfletcher.wordpress.com

Thanks for continuing to watch my stuff Chas.

lol lol ok mike thats cool if he is as good as you then this world if better off then we first thought .. I'm going to check his stuff out now

  • Michael Roper 2 years ago
Worth it? Goosebumps.... absolutely beautiful Mike!

You do our awesome part of the world more justice than any travel show would ever do...

I'm very jealous... I can't wait to be old and filthy rich to join the rest of those passengers - or better yet, get paid to do it! =]
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Thanks Mike. Yeh I'm hearing you, though not every one who goes on True North is old and yeh it isn't a cheap trip but neither is going to Europe or Canada. I was lucky enough to get my trip covered but I worked my arse off. Are you feeling sorry for me yet? Didn't think so.

It's a shame to leave this sort of a trip until your too old but I can tell you first hand all those "Oldies" would put a lot of us younger crew to shame. They were amazing, climbing gorges, catching serious fish, swimming under waterfalls. If you have to make a decision, go to Europe to see a bunch of old Churches, museums etc, get hassled by crowds of people or go catch a Barra in complete tranquility with nothing but a Sea Eagle shrieking high up on the gorge in front of you whilst you catch your dinner, there is just nothing else like it.

Win lotto and do a whole year on the boat you will never regret it.

    Thanks for watching Mike
  • Michael Roper 2 years ago
Haha, yeah, I was generalising a bit, it was just that last shot of everyone that made me laugh! =]

Believe me, if I could do it now, I would... I did the whole west coast with my family when I was younger and loved it, but to experience it like this would be another kind of awesome..

Hmm, maybe I could rent out a cabin as an office, and work remotely.. not sure i'd get too much done though!

    Great work!!!

Michael, this is awesome. Absolutely well done. If True North's sales don't spike, I will be amazed. It's been a dream of mine for ages to go on this (yes, yes, I know about Christian's workshop), so I am so jealous. I love every minute of this, congratulations.

"I think it is worth it" - that, Michael, is the understatement of the year.

PS: You disabled downloads though - I'd love to see it in full quality without the occasional jerkiness??
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Thanks Simon. I see you have been busy up that way too. Steal some of those diamonds from Argyle and you can join Christian as well. I have handed the Tilt shift lenses back and are back to the normal stuff. Glad you liked it. I'm sorry about the no download as this stuff is getting compiled to be pushed with Foxtel so if this happens I may start getting paid for my trouble. Just wanted to keep it locked up for now. Hope you understand.

Did it take long to download on your computer? I'm thinking I may need to shorten it for Vimeo.

    Thanks for the comments.

    Mike
  • SimonB plus 2 years ago
Mike, yes, Sunday at Emma Gorge was awesome. I will be back there soon for longer. It's inspiring country. Don't know about the diamond stealing, kinda career limiting :-) I dearly hope you tie up something with Foxtel, you deserve it.

No, it didn't take long, I have a pretty good pipe at home so it streamed pretty well once it got going - only a few seconds or so (less than 10), then the feed kept up with it.

    Good luck.

PS: I'll do the cruise one day... It's on my list.

PPS: I bet that water on the bow was cold, Emma Gorge was so cold out in the middle that my chest was burning on the swim back!

Another great video. Got to love that 5D, lets hope Canon gives us some manual controls soon! I have been dying to get out and shoot some stuff with mine but so far I have only used it on a corporate shoot for RioTinto - not as fun as yours...
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Thanks Mark. Manual controls would be great. Check out Brad McGiveron's stuff. He uses Carl Zeiss glass with full aperture control. We have toyed with it but have too many Canon Lenses at our disposal.
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Oh yeah the Rio Tinto Video!!! I wanted to post it to the world but got told no as it may reveal too many rio Tinto top secret designs Buggggggaaaaaa!!

Its due to be released publicly in 50 years time. Ha Ha
  •
  • Mark Welker plus 2 years ago
Incredible Mike, incredible. Results like these indicate the 5D will indeed revolutionise the video camera market for good.

And on a professional note: an invaluable contribution to Western Australian tourism.
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Thanks Mark. The 5D is pretty good for what you pay for but high end stuff will always look better in the end. I see you were down south a while ago. Next time you are down look me up at our gallery and we can talk video. I believe you guys have dumped your tourism marketing agency and are looking for a new fresh approach. I have an idea I think may work. Who do I speak to?

Sorry mate I have been told I need to start making money from my vid's so you are my only contact. If I don't make any money my partners wont let me spend any more money on technology. Bugga!!!
  • Mark Welker plus 2 years ago
Hi Mike, I'll find out who the best person is for you to talk to. The marketing agency went out for tender, which is closed now, and won't be decided I think till July. So all teh creative stuff is kinda on hold till then. But in the meantime, feel free to email your idea, otherwise I'll try to put you in contact with a few useful people.
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Thanks Mark. I'll do a rough script of my idea and run it past you. Hey you can get involved in the filming process if you like. May require a trip on True North though.

Another awesome vid Mike - definitely takes you away from the dull grind of the day, well for 13min56sec anyway. Glad to see you didn't do the float test with the camera gear - did a workshop with Christian while you were away and he was a bit twitchy without his beloved 5DMkII. Obviously it was in great hands - I must say he did express great faith in your abilities and for good reason. Really captivating stuff - congratulations.
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Thanks Muzz. Hope Christian didn't bore you too much. On a damage scale I think Christian and I are equal on damage due to stupidity. Don't worry he can have my 5D after I get the new Red Scarlet.

I did float my Mic boom but alas it didn't float. Needless to say I said the F word a few times in quick succession.
    Shit happens.

I've seen Brad's stuff and it's great. I have been using some Leica R lenses and some old Nikon primes that work great. Where did you shoot for Rio? We were up at West Angeles which was pretty cool - except for that Pilbara Mist!!
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
My Bro Christian and I shot the Hope Downs South expansion plant for Rio. Sorry I thought you must of seen what I had done. We where there to shoot stills but I knocked up a tongue in cheek vid also using some tilt shift lenses making the whole plant looking like a set from the Thunderbirds hence the title "Rio Tinto is Go!!!" Not too sure if they all got it but I was told not to show it. I thought it was pretty cool but alas no one can see it. If you have clearance I can show you then I will have to kill you HaHa!!!
  •
  • Mark Griffin 2 years ago
We had played about with some timelapse and the 24mm TS lens and were going to try it out but ran out of time onsite. I did see Christian mention having to remove his Rio shots a while back, they are a bit touchy about that I have to say...

  • Muzz 2 years ago
No he didn't bore us, quite the opposite in fact! Bad luck about the mic boom - hey at least you didn't leave your tripod at home!
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Yeh what a dickhead. I couldn't believe it when I walked upstairs and saw it sitting there. If he pulls that stunt on True North its all over for him.

The mic boom is making a nice croc accessory.

You realise that by not allowing downloads, I am unable to hate you and your talent in proper smooth HD?
This is not fair dude. And I was all revved up for a good hating session with a fair amount of jealousy thrown in…

  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Hate on Avey. All my mates hate me for going on that boat also. I had to block it to keep control of the footage as it may end up being purchsed for TV. Sorry mate but a man has to eventually make some money. If it all flops I will personally send you a disc with my autograph on it so you can burn it or flush it down the loo or something like that :)

Keep watching and keep hating my friend.
  • Wayne Avanson plus 2 years ago
I Look forward to flushing it. Rest assured it will be done with respect, solemnity (apart from all the laughing) and a great deal of satisfaction.

A: for the fact that after all your swanking about with the rich set, you didn't earn a bean, and B: because you obviously underestimate my capacity to hate your work.

I'm almost glad, in a perverse kind of way, that your work isn't crap, because then I wouldn't be able to hate it quite so much…

I'll keep watching, don't worry. Watching, and waiting for you to make a slip up.

How's the Mark II's video quality/ease of use/storage compared to using an EX1/EX3. Currently, I use the EX3, but was thinking about purchasing the Mark II. I'm just finding it difficult to purchase once since it only is able to record 12 mins of continuous footage. Thoughts, comments?
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Hi PDI. I can't comment on the EX1,EX3 as I have never used them but they are dedicated video cameras where the 5D is not. The 5d cannot be cranked and has trouble following fast pan motion. It also over rides manual settings when used in video mode. This can be duped by disconnecting the lens which may possibly stuff it up. The audio from the camera is average and it is too light to hand hold without shaking. It also doesn't have setting controls to alter picture, sharpness, color etc.

Having said this it shoots Full HD 1080P at 30 frames per second and has a very realistic color reproduction. The footage looks amazing, you can use all the Canon Lenses or others with adapters, and its easy to lug around. The live view screen is amazing and setting a sharp focus is very easy. Keep it on a tripod and minimize fast pans and you have a great camera. You can also trick it up with a Redrock Micro kit but I am waiting for the next generation Canon or possible the new Red Scarlet.

I think it is well worth the small price tag. Hey if your not shooting full HD whats the point. Stay up with technology or you'll end up missing the boat. Parden the pun.

Hi Mike. This is your best yet. The video quality and the quality of your work is superb.
The stunning location has been captured to perfection and with the rest of your footage I'm sure you'll make a make a great little film.

I only hand out gold stars for the very best and this gets one. (:

    Cheers mate and congratulations.

Looks like you'd better start packing for the US. (:
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Cheers Big Merv. I guess i was due for a Gold Star from you sooner or later. Hope Christian didn't get one before me. Thanks for watching and get on that boat if you can it is the best thing I have ever done.

    Mike can you believe this.

A mate of mine won a trip for 2 on True North a few years ago and got a bit bored with the whole thing after awhile.

    Man can you believe that!!!!
  •
  • Dave Catley 2 years ago
WOW Mike, that was some stunning footage. You certainly made the True North look worth the money.

I can't believe they can get the bow of the ship so close to the waterfall, that is awesome.

You're definately getting to be the more famous twin I think :)
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Thanks Dave. Would of been nice to have the light minded crew up there getting some killer shots. Your a rich man are you booking in on Christians trip?

The True North is awesome and the crew are superb at what they do. It was a dream trip and I hope I get the opportunity again one day. May have to pay for it next time.

We will have to catch up mate. Let us know next time you are in town.
  •
  • Dave Catley 2 years ago
Not that rich yet Mike, would love to get on a cruise like that with a few other photographers though. Surely Christian needs another sidekick :)

Just need to get my 5D sold so I can pick up the new 5D MK II and I'll be ready for some adventures.

We must be due for another trip down south soon, be great to catch up. Mind you, we did did Bunker Bay over Easter and I'm still trying to work through the images, never seems to be enough time ...

Michael, fantastic work!!!! Truly awesome video. I am in Broome at the moment, and this makes me want to try and sneak aboard the boat and come along, wow!
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Lucky bugga. I'm back home and our first big storm of the season is going to hit tomorrow. Winter is coming. Your a long way from home mate. Are you heading down south?
  • Flemming Bo Jensen plus 2 years ago
Africa first, now Australia and next month an assignment on Borneo. Yep, I am very far from home! No, not coming south, weather is much too nice up here in the North :D

  • Paul Frederick 2 years ago
Michael....simply AWESOME! Can't believe you would try and pull off a big gig like this solely with the 5D. I've heard of so many limitations with that cam I would've chickened out and used an EX or something. However, you sure did pull it off! Really stunning images, congrats!
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Cheers Paul. I had a lot of help from a beautiful location, a great boat, and great crew. The 5D was in its element. Small, light, easy to climb with. I new it had the goods just so long as I kept it simple and didn't drop the bloody thing overboard. Still a big fan of your stuff so this is a great compliment.

    Cheers Mate.

Mike, really enjoyed it, too many good points to list but I especially liked the "An Ancient Land" sequence from 09:56 which included one of your distinctive mono-chrome scenes at 11:12 (also the affection shown to the fish prior to this sequence lol!)

Great film to watch on a rainy afternoon here in Pom Land, thanks for uploading, 4M2.
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Thanks 4M2. Sean who was the fish kisser is a funny guy and we pissed ourselves laughing most of the trip. I had to throw in one black and white scene even after my wife said I shouldn't. I'm a brave man going against a women.

Hey you have summer coming ours has just finished. Think yourself lucky and we are coming over to make sure we keep the ashes. You cant have good weather and good cricket HaHa!!!!

Till the next vid cheers mate!!!

  • Liam Underwood 2 years ago
mate, this is truely some of the best footage i have ever seen.

I wish i could lie to myself and say the EX1 can match the quality, but overall.. it just cant. Canon need to release a camera with the quality of the Mark II with FULL manual control.. dedicated to video.

oh yeah, next time you get to do one of these shoots, take me with you yeah?

next time im in duns with me EX1 + Letus i should pop into the studio and say G'day!

Hopefully i can do some work with you in the future! maybe when i get my hands on the Scarlet im saving for :)
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Liam, Liam, Liam, if I had a dollar for everyone that wanted to come with me on the next trip. Do drop in at the gallery next time you are down. It would be good to chat vid. Hey if you get that Scarlet before I do let me know so I can have a good look at it. I have one on my shopping list also but dont tell my partners as they think I have spent enough money for no return already.

True North is an amazing adventure. If you ever want a great experience go on it. It will blow you away.

Always interested in collaborating on projects.

    Thanks for tuning in mate.

Hi Mike. I love your film and can imagine how beautiful your journey was. Now technically speaking how did you like to shoot with a still camera instead of a camcorder? I had the XHA1 and just bought the new full HD JVC GY-HM100E. Is there a video camera that can match the quality of your Canon still camera? Also I would be very interested to know how you compressed your video, probably with the Compressor of FCP and which settings did you use. I often have beautiful Quicktime footage and when it is coded down to flash in vimeo it looses a lot. How did you handle? Best

    Kedar, Zurich
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Hi Kedar. The Kimberley in Western Australia is an amazing wilderness area which is very difficult to traverse without a boat and chopper. The 5D is great to use but it is too light to hand hold and the screen doesn't flip so if you want to shoot low you have to get on your hands and knees.

There is not much for the price that can match the 5D at the moment but the new Red Scarlet may kick all the others Butt.

I do use compressor to convert to Vimeo and there is a great Tutorial on Vimeo which shows you how to do it in compressor step by step. Just search in vimeo and you should find it. Sorry cant tell you procedure off hand as I have it all setup automatic.

Truly stunning and beautiful work. The scenery is just magnificent out there. Well done.

Interesting to see the Mark 2's performance, it seems the only thing that gave it problems in there was the helicopter rotors, and considering how fast they move that is pretty impressive.
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
I tricked the camera to do that with the rotor blades as I thought it looked cool. Prior to that you couldn't really see them. It's a bloody good camera.

Still can't get a free one from Canon though.

    Thanks Andrew

    Mike,

really great stuff!!! The only thing missing would be some underwater footage :-)
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
I'm scared of Sharks and Crocodiles all of which live up there in the thousands. Swimming is a no no.

But I'm hearing ya. I guess the waterholes we swam in could be of interest.

Take me with you on the next trip and I wil take care of the crocodile and shark footage ;-)

Have you got a shark cage HHHmmmm OK you can come. True North does heaps of diving trips in some of the best diving locations in the world. They even dive with great white sharks. Cool.

    mike you lucky bastard !!

very nice shots... not only did you come away with a great experience, you came away with fantastic shots too !

any tips you can give using the 5d ?

    i wanna buy one soon

oh and what essential glass do you recommend getting
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Lucky Bastard? Yep thats me Anthony. I'll give you the best tip. Buy one cause they are the best, however!!!!!

Do some research on the Red Scarlet and way up if it's worth hanging for one of those. I'm looking at one.

Good glass will give the best results obviously. We use all Canon L Series prime lenses and they seem to work fine. Dont know much about Nikon. Carl Zeiss lenses gives you full aperture control which you will find is handy since the 5D overrides the aperture when you hit record in video mode.

    Good luck
  • Anthony Johnson 2 years ago
he he .. you know it :-P

i have been hanging on for a scarlet now for ages .. i would love the scarlet .. but i read that the makers were rushing it thru to get it to the market place by end of 2009 .. but that they said it would be crazy to release it in this economic climate ! so in their words they have taken people off the project and do not have any ugency to get it out !! .. that was a killer to read ! ...

also i use a macbook pro, and i think it may be impossible to run 3k/4k footage on fcp on it ...

so the 5d2 may be the right camera for me in the mean time, i am a music producer, but am trying to get into film/tv projects ... i have hv20 which is great, but i need a camera that will look great on tv ..and i have seen the fiveusa idents and they look amazing .. so there is hope that what i produce will get on tv maybe ..

i would like to use it for some music videos .. and of course tv is where they are going :-)

i just learnt a new phrase "good glass" lol

    Hi Mike

Love the shots mate. Tossing up between a HPX170 and the 5D as a backup cam in Africa. Did you convert that down to 25p?
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Good Choice on the 5D backup. As far as 25P convert, shit I don't know. All I know is the 5D shoots full HD 1080P footage at 30 frames a second. I convert this raw file to Apple Pro Res 422 in compressor for editing and then compress to Vimeo's requirements.

I not up on all the tech stuff. I believe that if it looks good when you are looking through the lens then its going to look good one way or another in some format.

I'm just a novice hack who has fun doing this stuff and is learning along the way. I'm sure one day someone will say "Now if you had converted this to that you would of got a better look on this TV. I'm a trial and error sort of guy.

You guys are pro's so I need to pick your brains. Next time your down Dunsborough way look me up. I need some good advice on the techo stuff.

    Thanks for watching Mark

I'll do that. And your too modest, that footage would put some so called "pro's" to shame.

Will be interesting to see how the 5D goes as a "run and gun" in the field ENG camera.

Welcome to pick my brains mate....so long as I can pick yours.

No Probs Tony. Your the editor so you know its not what the camera produces so much as the guy who makes sense of it all "The Editor" Do you guys use FCpro?

    Beautiful! Simply stunning.

How do you manage to set the shutter speed & ISO? Do you lock it in with the "*" button? I ask because I'm assuming you were somehow able to achieve ***consistent*** shutter speeds and ISO???

AAhhh you want to know the secret!!! Don't tell Canon but it's the old twist the lens trick.

Western Australia rocks and so does the 5D Mk2. Thanks for tuning in Misha. Where are you from. The text on your vids looks Russian. Sorry if I offend your nationality.
