Images Of Western Australia's Kimberley
Sorry guys, this is a bit of a long one. If you start the movie and then read my ramble it should be ready to watch.
I was fortunate enough to be invited aboard possibly the greatest adventure cruise boat in Australia if not the world. The boat for those of you who have not heard of it is the "TRUE NORTH" and it circumnavigates the Australian continent visiting some of the most remote coastline in Australia and also ventures past these waters to many unseen Pacific Island destinations.
"TRUE NORTH" is designed for pure adventure whilst providing a 5 star luxury platform for those hours not spent diving off spectacular coral atolls, catching elusive Barramundi, swimming in pristine waterholes, or taking in a cultural experience first hand.
All these things are achieved by the incredible design of the "True North" with its shallow water ability and possibly the coolest thing ever, the Bell 407 helicopter. I can only speak of my personal experience on the East Kimberley expedition, and from the moment I landed on the heli deck I was in awe of this amazing vessel.
True North cruises effortlessly through the maze of waterways of the Kimberley placing you in the most amazing locations to maximize your experience. For those locations that can only be visited by helicopter True North's skillful pilot Rob would place you precariously on the edge of an amazing waterfall for a picnic lunch like no other or take you to a waterhole full of Barra that have never seen a fisherman.
The icing on the cake for me was the crew of the True North. Without a doubt these guy's and gal's are a credit to the whole experience of adventure, luxury, comfort, and endless excitement. With 1 crew member for every 2 passengers every need was covered and nothing was left wanting.
I have never seen such an awesome place as the Kimberley and I hope you can get a small sense of what it is like to visit here from my video. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity for me and I must thank Mark and Craig for placing their faith in me to capture some amazing footage for them. I hope it can help in spreading the word about this amazing country and this truly unique experience.

For those of you interested more in how this was shot I used the following gear.
2 x Canon 5D MK2, Canon Prime lenses 24mm, 50mm, 85mm, 400mm, Miller Tripod, Lee Filter Kit with grads, Fostex field recorder, Rode Mics, (Sorry about the audio in the fishing segment. That was straight from the camera as I wanted to catch a fish so I didn't set up proper sound.)
Edited in Final Cut Pro
Music from "The Rabbit Proof fence" by Peter Gabriel
"The Thin Red Line" by Hans Zimmer

Mike
What is the general idea of your film?
Thanks for continuing to watch my stuff Chas.
You do our awesome part of the world more justice than any travel show would ever do...
I'm very jealous... I can't wait to be old and filthy rich to join the rest of those passengers - or better yet, get paid to do it! =]
It's a shame to leave this sort of a trip until your too old but I can tell you first hand all those "Oldies" would put a lot of us younger crew to shame. They were amazing, climbing gorges, catching serious fish, swimming under waterfalls. If you have to make a decision, go to Europe to see a bunch of old Churches, museums etc, get hassled by crowds of people or go catch a Barra in complete tranquility with nothing but a Sea Eagle shrieking high up on the gorge in front of you whilst you catch your dinner, there is just nothing else like it.
Win lotto and do a whole year on the boat you will never regret it.
Thanks for watching Mike
Believe me, if I could do it now, I would... I did the whole west coast with my family when I was younger and loved it, but to experience it like this would be another kind of awesome..
Hmm, maybe I could rent out a cabin as an office, and work remotely.. not sure i'd get too much done though!
Great work!!!
"I think it is worth it" - that, Michael, is the understatement of the year.
PS: You disabled downloads though - I'd love to see it in full quality without the occasional jerkiness??
Did it take long to download on your computer? I'm thinking I may need to shorten it for Vimeo.
Thanks for the comments.
Mike
No, it didn't take long, I have a pretty good pipe at home so it streamed pretty well once it got going - only a few seconds or so (less than 10), then the feed kept up with it.
Good luck.
PS: I'll do the cruise one day... It's on my list.
PPS: I bet that water on the bow was cold, Emma Gorge was so cold out in the middle that my chest was burning on the swim back!
Its due to be released publicly in 50 years time. Ha Ha
And on a professional note: an invaluable contribution to Western Australian tourism.
Sorry mate I have been told I need to start making money from my vid's so you are my only contact. If I don't make any money my partners wont let me spend any more money on technology. Bugga!!!
Mike
I did float my Mic boom but alas it didn't float. Needless to say I said the F word a few times in quick succession.
Shit happens.
Mike
Keep up the good work!
Cheers
Paul
The mic boom is making a nice croc accessory.
This is not fair dude. And I was all revved up for a good hating session with a fair amount of jealousy thrown in…
he he

Keep watching and keep hating my friend.
A: for the fact that after all your swanking about with the rich set, you didn't earn a bean, and B: because you obviously underestimate my capacity to hate your work.
I'm almost glad, in a perverse kind of way, that your work isn't crap, because then I wouldn't be able to hate it quite so much…
I'll keep watching, don't worry. Watching, and waiting for you to make a slip up.
He he

Having said this it shoots Full HD 1080P at 30 frames per second and has a very realistic color reproduction. The footage looks amazing, you can use all the Canon Lenses or others with adapters, and its easy to lug around. The live view screen is amazing and setting a sharp focus is very easy. Keep it on a tripod and minimize fast pans and you have a great camera. You can also trick it up with a Redrock Micro kit but I am waiting for the next generation Canon or possible the new Red Scarlet.
I think it is well worth the small price tag. Hey if your not shooting full HD whats the point. Stay up with technology or you'll end up missing the boat. Parden the pun.
Mike
The stunning location has been captured to perfection and with the rest of your footage I'm sure you'll make a make a great little film.
I only hand out gold stars for the very best and this gets one. (:
Cheers mate and congratulations.
Looks like you'd better start packing for the US. (:
Mike
A mate of mine won a trip for 2 on True North a few years ago and got a bit bored with the whole thing after awhile.
Man can you believe that!!!!
I can't believe they can get the bow of the ship so close to the waterfall, that is awesome.
You're definately getting to be the more famous twin I think :)
The True North is awesome and the crew are superb at what they do. It was a dream trip and I hope I get the opportunity again one day. May have to pay for it next time.
We will have to catch up mate. Let us know next time you are in town.
Just need to get my 5D sold so I can pick up the new 5D MK II and I'll be ready for some adventures.
We must be due for another trip down south soon, be great to catch up. Mind you, we did did Bunker Bay over Easter and I'm still trying to work through the images, never seems to be enough time ...
Cheers!
Cheers Mate.
Great film to watch on a rainy afternoon here in Pom Land, thanks for uploading, 4M2.
Hey you have summer coming ours has just finished. Think yourself lucky and we are coming over to make sure we keep the ashes. You cant have good weather and good cricket HaHa!!!!
Till the next vid cheers mate!!!
I wish i could lie to myself and say the EX1 can match the quality, but overall.. it just cant. Canon need to release a camera with the quality of the Mark II with FULL manual control.. dedicated to video.
oh yeah, next time you get to do one of these shoots, take me with you yeah?
next time im in duns with me EX1 + Letus i should pop into the studio and say G'day!
Hopefully i can do some work with you in the future! maybe when i get my hands on the Scarlet im saving for :)
True North is an amazing adventure. If you ever want a great experience go on it. It will blow you away.
Always interested in collaborating on projects.
Thanks for tuning in mate.
Mike
Thanks for watching.
Kedar, Zurich
There is not much for the price that can match the 5D at the moment but the new Red Scarlet may kick all the others Butt.
I do use compressor to convert to Vimeo and there is a great Tutorial on Vimeo which shows you how to do it in compressor step by step. Just search in vimeo and you should find it. Sorry cant tell you procedure off hand as I have it all setup automatic.

Yep, he'd be washing dishes again.....
Interesting to see the Mark 2's performance, it seems the only thing that gave it problems in there was the helicopter rotors, and considering how fast they move that is pretty impressive.
Still can't get a free one from Canon though.
Thanks Andrew
really great stuff!!! The only thing missing would be some underwater footage :-)
But I'm hearing ya. I guess the waterholes we swam in could be of interest.
very nice shots... not only did you come away with a great experience, you came away with fantastic shots too !
any tips you can give using the 5d ?
i wanna buy one soon
oh and what essential glass do you recommend getting
Do some research on the Red Scarlet and way up if it's worth hanging for one of those. I'm looking at one.
Good glass will give the best results obviously. We use all Canon L Series prime lenses and they seem to work fine. Dont know much about Nikon. Carl Zeiss lenses gives you full aperture control which you will find is handy since the 5D overrides the aperture when you hit record in video mode.
Good luck
i have been hanging on for a scarlet now for ages .. i would love the scarlet .. but i read that the makers were rushing it thru to get it to the market place by end of 2009 .. but that they said it would be crazy to release it in this economic climate ! so in their words they have taken people off the project and do not have any ugency to get it out !! .. that was a killer to read ! ...
also i use a macbook pro, and i think it may be impossible to run 3k/4k footage on fcp on it ...
so the 5d2 may be the right camera for me in the mean time, i am a music producer, but am trying to get into film/tv projects ... i have hv20 which is great, but i need a camera that will look great on tv ..and i have seen the fiveusa idents and they look amazing .. so there is hope that what i produce will get on tv maybe ..
i would like to use it for some music videos .. and of course tv is where they are going :-)
i just learnt a new phrase "good glass" lol
yes i looked at a couple of nikon lenses sorry glass .. and they were like £1000 .. so kind too much for me ..
probably go for something thats close to that quality.. if i can
cheers for the advice.. i may be working with a singer on the gold coast .. so may bump into you (australias a small country right ? ) joke !

Love the shots mate. Tossing up between a HPX170 and the 5D as a backup cam in Africa. Did you convert that down to 25p?
I not up on all the tech stuff. I believe that if it looks good when you are looking through the lens then its going to look good one way or another in some format.
I'm just a novice hack who has fun doing this stuff and is learning along the way. I'm sure one day someone will say "Now if you had converted this to that you would of got a better look on this TV. I'm a trial and error sort of guy.
You guys are pro's so I need to pick your brains. Next time your down Dunsborough way look me up. I need some good advice on the techo stuff.
Thanks for watching Mark
Will be interesting to see how the 5D goes as a "run and gun" in the field ENG camera.
Welcome to pick my brains mate....so long as I can pick yours.
Tony
How do you manage to set the shutter speed & ISO? Do you lock it in with the "*" button? I ask because I'm assuming you were somehow able to achieve ***consistent*** shutter speeds and ISO???
I loved every single one of your video... you have a special talent of always capturing the right scene, light and magic.
Thank you for sharing
I wanna go to Australia and i will buy 5d mark 2 :)
