Finally I spend some time to do this Extreme Lowlight Test...
This was done in the same method of HV20 (the photo button trick). For that you need a memory card to adjust the exposure to the value that you'll have no Gain.
It’s a big difference!!! It’s the only way to shoot in Lowlight and getting the clear High Definition Image...
In the AUTO Mode you can see a lot of noise (looks like a SD cheap camera) but after manually adjusting the shutter speed and exposure... Voila!!! Perfect High Definition low light image!!!
In the Indoor scene my room was completely dark (I couldn´t see my hands...) only with 4 small candles and then with no candles, only the weak hand light...

    That's a huge difference!

I finally bought an SD card for the camera but have yet to try this out. Do you know of a good tutorial on how to do this?

yeah, you got the memory card!
use this link for the tutorial video.thedvshow.com/item/VJ6SPKKNRDJP438X

begin with the same settings as the tutorial and then customize it... i did like 5 different settings till i thought it was perfect...
    tell me your feedback
    c ya!

Tiago, Thanks for the link on setting up the correct settings for a night shot.
My problem is that I don't know what buttons to push to get the settings to come up on an HG10. If you have the time could you do a video or a document on how to do it in HG10? I will try to figure it out and try to post something.

    Thanks all.

do you have a memory card in your HG10 naya?
If you don´t just buy one (15 $ ) because you only can ajust to the correct settings with it...

buy one and i'll give you the tips :)

Ok Naya, just enable the option to take photos while filming on your camera and try to folow the tutorial video.thedvshow.com/item/VJ6SPKKNRDJP438X

in this test the shutter speed was 120 (in the tutorial is 50) , because seems to me that with my image looked clear with 120.
make shure to lock the exposure at 1.8 so you will have no gain...

I have an hv20, what is the the photo button trick?
  • Tiago Pierotti 6 months ago
    Hey Chris,
It’s a trick to configure your camera to shoot with low light conditions. Basically to eliminate the image noise...
If you have a memory card in your hv20 you can do that... the image definitely looks better!

    Cheers

Has anyone tried to use the Canon HG10 to shoot the stars in the night sky? I am working on a project where I need to do this. The HG10 looks really impressive with the videos you guys have taken.

    Thanks Tom!
For shooting the sky you'll need some telephoto lens (mostly for the stars...) The Moon it's easy to shoot with the zoom @ 35x so you don't lose so much quality with digital zoom.

Well.. i tried it.. but i think the preset mode "Spotlight" does almost the same thing.. it adds no grain and image is crisp but, on the other hand, it is also too dark.. (for filming family at home in late hours, you can't see faces because everything except bright areas under lights is dark). so from my point of view: if you make home video and you don't have time to prepare the scene, you should use some preset (or my choice - P program with slightly decreased exposure to reduce gain.. the Cine mode works well also.. it produces some "white dots" on the image, but definitely not as much as the grain on Auto setting.. And then, if you want to shoot more crisp (true hd) images, you should set Spotlight mode (or use this exposure hack, but, honestly, i think it's the same). Correct me if i'm wrong.

    hey Mario,
The spotlight mode does a great job but in my eyes this is wayyyy better. for controlling the light level you can adjust the shutter speed... less shutter speed will give you more light and the other way. i was the first to give that "spotlight" trick in the HG10 channel but trust me that the photo button trick is much better. in my "what do you see" video it was really dark and i used this trick and it came out perfect! You can see people, faces, everything with no noise (grain). Specially the original video with 15Mbps the quality is amazing...
