lights on is an audio visual performance created for the Ars Electronica museum in Linz, Austria, which has a facade that contains 1085 LED controllable windows. The windows' colors are changed in realtime with music that's broadcasted on speakers surrounding the building.

visuals coded in openframeworks by zachary lieberman, joel gethin lewis and damian stewart (yesyesno). music by daito manabe, with support from Taeji Sawai and Kyoko Koyama. we made this in three days :)

the performance is approximately 10 minutes long. this is an edit. also, we've recorded the output from the software (audio / OSC) and this performance can be replayed in the future for events, etc.

special thanks to the awesome ars electronica / futurelab crew, (maria, wolfgang, andreas, ramsay, horst, gerfried, maff, christopher and everyone else), also iris mayer, carolina vallejo, and rhizomatiks for helping make this possible. also a huge thanks to the excellent technicians Multivision who installed this system: is.gd/BnCy. some info about the install here: is.gd/BkP2

    all buildings should do this.

Actually. This comment freaks me out! After living in linz since the new AEC has opened, the thought of all buildings looking like this would be the most horrific schizo visual pollution to live with. One is more than enough. Not to say that the project is not great!

programming the working fixtures is not a big deal…the real job is installing addressing and making those fixtures work.I congratulate harware engineers and workers in this project, not the software artists.
edit: after a good explanation and giving the engineers value they deserved, I think I should congratulate also the software artists.

hmm -- actually it was pretty hard both to do this, and to make it have some elegance / be more then just a "light show" type thing... And we did have to fix *alot* of bugs with the system along the way, since we were the first ones to use it.

but you are right, the folks that did the install deserve a proper shot out and I've added some thanks in the credits.

also, deserving of big props is ars electronica, which had the thought to open this up to artists and design a simple protocol for controlling this thing. I think you will see alot of other folks making things with it for years to come.

    Well done guys!

Not to discredit, just to point out -- I'm pretty sure this was a software install done in 3 days. The hardware and software framework (eg. addressability) came with the space...that's the real win.
  • thesystemis plus 5 months ago
yes -- it's an amazing framework. other artists will be able to do stuff with it for years to come....

    thanks!
