For the last 30 or 40 years, or at least the 21 that I have been alive, we have been so relentlessly marketed to that now we think everyone is a salesperson (which is probably true most of the time). We are so afraid of being taken advantage of that we look after ourselves first. We've become a nation of selfish and cynical people, and there are more than enough problems to make us cynical, from the economy, to the ugly political race, to the biased news, to the stupid war in Iraq, to the terrible health care system or the fact that we are destroying the planet. It's really easy to stay cynical & point our finger at the dumb politicians or greedy banks and corporations, but that really isn't going to do anything. Thinking like this will leave us lonely and miserable.

There is, however, the potential to do things greater than that of our own self interest. There are a lot of problems today, but also a lot more opportunities. We need to learn to create our own value in the world, to take responsibility for our actions (from the things we buy, to how we spend our time) and celebrate our freedom to be anything, do anything, and change everything.
