Bunyan, located just north of Cooma near Kosciuszko National Park, is a perfect location for wave soaring and is home to the Canberra Gliding Club (canberragliding.org). The Club encourages visitors to participate in their annual wave camp each September to share the opportunity to climb to diamond heights.
David presents a very practical guide to wave soaring with specific reference to Bunyan conditions and operational issues. Safety is of course paramount and is emphasised with a comprehensive discussion of launch techniques and the physiological effects of high altitude flying.
David Pietsch was brought up in South Australia and initially flew with the Waikerie Gliding Club. David has spent 35 years as a pilot with the air force and has maintained his interest in gliding throughout. Now David flies with the Canberra Gliding Club in his ASW 20.
