I am not a fan of Jesus...I am a follower of Jesus!
A fan is simply defined as an enthusiastic admirer. I must admit that I have spent a lot of my life as a fan of Jesus. I was born into a Christian home. I listened to “Christian” music, had the t-shirts with the cheesy Christian slogans, and I even wore a WWJD (what would Jesus do) wristband. I was an admirer of Jesus and I wanted to be like Him...and, I thought that was enough.
However, the more I read the Bible and understand who Jesus is, the more I realize that Jesus was not really interested in fans, he was interested in followers. He wasn't very interested in the excitement of the crowds but in the commitment of His followers. I am convicted by the words of Jesus in Luke 9:23 where He said, “You must deny yourself and pick up your cross and follow me.”
The challenge to deny yourself and follow Jesus is a bit too much for some, but on this journey called life, it is what He said was required. He was saying that until you surrender everything you will never experience the true life He wants you to have. Maybe you want to be close enough to Jesus to get all the benefits, but not so close that it requires sacrifice. You want to get into heaven, but you don't want to carry a cross with you. Jesus doesn't give us this option.
That is what this series, taken from the book “Not a Fan” by Kyle Idleman, coming this September to Central Community Church is all about. I would like to personally invite you to explore what it means to really live on purpose...the way Jesus lived it!
My name is Bill Markham, and I am not a fan.
