Looked good Phil.. those PL lenses sure delivered a pro 'film look', but that said, it was difficult to tell the between the stock lens. One thing I noticed: It looked slightly pixelated some of the time, like the resolution was being halved...? I watched it full screen on a LCD that is 1280 pixels wide..
  • erikals 1 year ago
i noticed this too, found it kind of strange, as other GH1 footage i have seen has been much sharper. my guess is that it is a compression problem of some sort. (?)

Philip, thanks for challenging this cam for us !!! It shows, that great films can also be made without having a 10.000 Dollar equipment. That gives hope and inspiration to all creative people, who do not have such a big money.

  • Philip Bloom extras plus 2 years ago
yeah, there is noise there...in my blog i really recommending shooting 720p as the 1080p 17mbps codec is quite weak.

Can this camera be used with Canon's EF and EF-S lenses?
  • Philip Bloom pro 2 years ago
they the ones without manual apertures? sorry am no Canon expert...if so, no. There is no current way for the circuits to interface but that may change. Also you get a 2x magnification factor as the sensor is half the size

hey phillip does the gh1's mic input only support the mic from panasonic or can i put my rode mic on it to?
  • Philip Bloom extras plus 2 years ago
i have a rode, so when I get my gh1 will test it. it does need an adaptor though as it is non standard size
  • Martin Haasdijk 2 years ago

Philip, How would you compare video modes of the GH1 and the 5D Mark II ?

    - Workflow?
    - Image quality?
    - Stock kit lens?

I'm about to buy either one.
  • Philip Bloom pro 2 years ago
    workflow...gh1 way better
    image quality..5d way better
stock lens...dont know what the 5d stock is but the gh1 has a wicked stock lens, albeit a bit slow
  • Gab Labelle plus 2 years ago
I finally bought the GH1 and let me tell that the workflow is just great!

    - Put the SD card in the new Macbook Pro ;
    - Import the AVCHD movie files into FCP ;
    - The files are automatically converted to Apple ProRes 422 during import (fast) and I'm ready to edit.

    I'm a happy man.

It is beautiful, but P.B. is a skilled and clever pro, perfect phocamshooting (PHOCAMMING) results in great looking moving slideshow footage, so not ideal for camera movements or quick moving objects at all. Beginners have to be aware phocam design and ergonomics are not ready yet for moving footage and objects like in most event docu and wildlife videography! Agree?!
  • Philip Bloom pro 2 years ago
not really true Jan. It is no different to the 5dmkII which has even worse limitations, but better picture quality and low light. My first footage was all moving handheld and the autofocus functions make it very easy to use...yes it isn't a true video camera yet though...

Hi Philip I am a big fan of your work and really appreaciate all the info you bring to the community.
I have a question, I recently purchased the GH1 and noticed that the lcd screen displays some faint yellow like vertical lines, the lines are fixed so they do not move and thought it was just the display but when i captured it, it had the lines also. The lines stand out more in low light, did you have this issue when you tested it? I see that the lines are not visible when compresed down for vimeo but the raw footage will have them and they are easy to see.
  • Philip Bloom pro 2 years ago
thats really not good. sounds like a fault. is it happening at all ISOs?

  • Ufilmhouse.com plus 2 years ago
Yes, I even tested at all ISO's and it is present. Here some pictures of what I am looking at.

Hi Philip I'm one of your fans from Brazil. First of all, congrats for your brilliant work and thanks for all the information about GH1 and other products like Sony Ex1 and so on. I think you have been making a great job both when you are shooting and also editing. I believe that great images are nothing without a soundtrack that matches the scene. When it happens the magic is done. That's a talent and I think you are a master.
I'm very interested in the GH1 and in my researches on the net after downloading some raw footage I discovered that the avchd(.mts) videos are full of artifacts and problems due to compression. They recomend to use avchd because of the quality but the images must be without movement. If there is some movement the choice must be jpeg but the quality will decrease.

What do you think about it?

    What format do you choose?

On a review someone said that sometimes the camera miss some frames(gop) while recording and this fact you will only be noticed at the preview, or in the timeline. Have you notice it?

In all your videos you make very slow pans, in certains reviews they say that gh1 has less problems with rolling shutter than others. Did you notice it?

I hope to be clear despite of my english.

    Cheers.

    Hermínio.

    BROTHER BLOOM...YOU ROCK!
JUST GOT A GH2, AND BESIDES THE VOIGTLANDER NOKTON 25mm (0.95)...in your opinion what's the best lo-light lens for the buck? Please don't say the Zeiss CP.2 -85mm, I played around with that lens on a F100 and I fell in love with it...just don't love the price...but I understand why it's such a dream glass piece, it makes recording images so much fun...good day!
