Located at the bottleneck of North America's central flyway, central Nebraska's Platte River faces threats never before seen. In addition to irrigation, municipalities, and recreation, the Platte is crucial for hundreds of thousands migratory birds for six weeks every year in late winter and early spring. Audubon Society's Rowe Sanctuary and the Platte River Recovery Implementation Program, along with many other organizations, are working to protect the river and conserve habitats for these (endangered) species through conservation and education.
I, Steven Speicher, completed this documentary as part of my capstone creative/thesis project for undergraduate graduation at University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Environmental Studies Program. Additionally, this story scratches the surface of many others explored in the Platte Basin Time-Lapse project. Learn more at plattebasintimelapse.com.
