really nice, you convinced me that the 500d can produce some good footage. thanks.

What lens/lens' did you shoot with?
  • Anders Bäckman 6 months ago
    Thanks! :) Shot with the kit lens (18-55 IS)& Canon 50 1.4.
  • Robert Holtby 5 months ago
Did you use any lens filters with this?
  • Anders Bäckman 5 days ago
    No, didn't use any filters.

Looks gorgeous. How's the jello effect, looks like there's a touch in there? What frame rate does it shoot?

You've got a great eye. Excellent.
  • Anders Bäckman 6 months ago
There definitely is some rolling shutter going on but I don't think it's that bad compared to the CMOS-based camcorders out there. I did own a Canon HF10 last year and it had the same problem. Not quite as apparent as on the 500D though.

Thanks a lot for your kind words! :)

hey man great video! i've been looking all over for someone to tell me if you can set the aperture prior to recording like the d90 or does the T1i set the aperture according the the lighting of the scene?
  • Anders Bäckman 5 months ago
The T1i is full auto in video mode so you really can't do anything but point, shoot and focus. However, there is some methods to get the aperture down. The best method right now probably is to use ND-filters, but then you sacrifice light to get the aperture down which equals more noise.
  • Brock Nordstrom 29 days ago
you can set your aperture in manual mode, slightly rotate the lens so it cuts off connection with the camera, switch to video mode, and then it's stuck in that aperture.
have to manual-focus though, but that's pretty standard seeing as the auto-focus isn't quite teh bee's knees.
  • Anders Bäckman 5 days ago
Absolutely, that's another way. Definitely the cheapest way. But just as you say - you lose all electronics then and you still can't adjust anything manually. A vari-ND let's you adjust the shutter speed which also means that you can change aperture on the fly - all while you still got the electronics engaged. For me this is a must, since I really want image stabilization in action on my IS-lenses.

Nice. Very phtographic syle of video which the camera seems to lend itself well to.

    Nice approach!

Great footage & editing but, grain is pretty nasty.
You need to get better lens.
  • Anders Bäckman 5 days ago
    Thanks.

You wouldn't believe how dark it was in some of the shots (it's all just natural light). I think any cam would have struggled with this regardless of lens choice. Unfortunately, I didn't have much time to shoot this, otherwise I would have made it in better conditions.

    What is the music ?

    Great vid!!
  • Anders Bäckman 5 months ago
Hint: Take a look at his left wrist. There actually is a tattoo with the name/logo of the band. ;)
  • Adrian Cacciola plus 5 months ago
Oh, is see it !! Ok thanks !
  • Mats Ek 5 months ago
Name of the band is "palms" and i do not have the name in ink on my wrist. haha. i have a logo on my ribs. Its my soloband and this is just a demo song for making this little film.

Don't know what you are talking about.
Song is from Nine Inch Nails, "Ghosts" album
  •
  • gregthedude plus 5 months ago
did you use twixtor or time remapping?
  • Anders Bäckman 5 months ago
    Neither.
  • gregthedude plus 5 months ago
what was your method of slow motion sir?
  • Anders Bäckman 5 months ago
I've experimented a lot with time warping but some overcranking mode would be golden and really essential for super clean slowmo. In the consumer class I think the GH1 can do 60p. And then of course there is the Casios today which can do some insanely ridiculous overcranking. Would love to try one of those. Or why not a RED...but then we're talking a completely different league. ;)

    should i sell my hv30 and get a 500d?
The indie look is great. and i need it for making of or something. as a second cam. my first is a fx1000. is the sound okay???
  • Anders Bäckman 5 months ago
It's all about what you shoot and how you shoot. I've shot some with a HV30 and is great, especially for it's price. It's got a really wide zoom range, great image stabilization, stereo sound and fast autofocus. You'll never be able to get all that in the 500D regardless of which lens you get.

The reason why I have a 500D now is that I want a hybrid camera since I do lots of stills too, and really appreciate to have both stills- and video-capability in the same cam.

Bottom line: Get a 5D Mk2 and some sweet piece of stabilized glass if you can afford it and if you don't mind it's size and the lack of autofocus. ;)
  •
  • Ghostpictures.de 5 months ago
If i have the money for a mk2 i dont ask anyone. ^^ but i am poor. =D
I allways wanted to shoot some pictures.
Than with this awesome movie in this amazing look, i fell in love. awesome for music videos, behind the scenes or family partys.

I shoot with my hv30 not very often... but this 500d. Wow... =)

    Was this done in RAW?
  • Anders Bäckman 5 months ago
No, this isn't RAW. RAW so far is just for stills in the T1i.
  • ciril 5 months ago
AVCHD compression is in Lumix GH-1, Canon 500d and 5Dm2 uses H.264 codec.
  • Anders Bäckman 5 months ago
That's right. However, AVCHD is using H264 so it's not that different then. The black sheep is the Nikon-cameras. They really need to drop MJPEG soon if they want to compete in DSLR-V.
  • George Ou 4 months ago
I have the 500D, and the quality is great. I don't mind the lack of autofocus that much, though it would be great if they could give you some kind of focus indicator in the LCD view to help you do manual focus. The main problem with the 500D is the erratic exposure problem, and I document that here formortals.com/canon-500d-t1i-erratic-exposure-problem/.

As for MJPEG, doesn't that give you true individual frames for every frame? Isn't that an advantage if you need good frame control?

Did you edit the video with the cinematic ratio or added black stripes over 16:9 screen?

I've actually striped on my camera to get this aspect from the getgo.

great filming , this video makes me want the t1i but i cant decide on it or the nikon d5000..
  • Echinadrome 4 months ago
I actually considered purchasing that camera; I hear that the nikon has better noise management, but the t1i has better color reproduction. I don't really shoot in low-light, so I chose canon (and my friends have canon lenses :)

wondered if you've experimented with Picture Looks or did you just use Neutral. Content wise very nice but could have used a bit of anger around 02:05 to balance it out, then come back nice for the end. You have it all there with broken glass and tatoos. Just my opinion : )
