The University of Wisconsin-Madison Arts Institute, Theatre & Drama Department, and Office for Multicultural Arts Initiatives welcomed Stew to the UW-Madison campus as artist in residence for the fall 2011 semester. The Arts Institute Interdisciplinary Arts Residency Program brings innovative artists to campus to teach semester-long, interdepartmental courses and to publicly present their work for campus and community audiences.
Creator of the Tony award-winning Broadway rock musical Passing Strange and front man of the band The Negro Problem, Stew is a singer-songwriter, musician, and playwright. While in residence Stew taught a song-writing course called "Stew's Song Factory" and also hosted "Stew & Friends," a free public series each Monday night featuring award-winning artists on the cutting edge of Broadway, theater, cabaret, rock, jazz, and film.
