A recent real estate transaction between the University of Nebraska and Lincoln Race Course ( formerly named State Fair Park, until the Fair moved to Grand Island several years ago) meant that Lincoln would be hosting its last season of live racing in the summer of 2012. The historic land will soon be transformed into new buildings and parking lots for the campus expansion.
When I was first made aware of this I felt great sadness and I knew there would be multiple stories to tell. I approached the General Manager and asked if I could document the season and he agreed. Unfortunately, a five minute video isn't enough time to share all of them, or translate the love, loyalty and reward that come with the sport. Its my hope to have additional stories available in the very near future.
Previous to the recent session, I was just a casual fan. After spending most of my weekends taking photos and shooting video this past session I'm now officially hooked on the sport. Now I want to do whatever I can to assist in saving racing for Lincoln.
Throughout the season, I felt welcomed by horsemen, in the work areas... from the backside stables, jockey's locker room, paddock area and on the starting gate. I sincerely hope this video with mean a great deal to them as well as it does for me.
