"Novel by an oak tree" is an attempt to produce a novel from a conversation with an oak tree. To establish a common language, vibrational data from the tree was measured during a complete reading aloud of Virginia Woolf's "Orlando." The vibrations of the tree in response to the reading became the translation key for the conversation. Over a period of several hours following the reading, vibrations from the tree were again measured, this time translated into words using the established key. This part of the conversation produced the novel, 'seductiveness the which issued from the whole person.'
