For the past few weeks I've been practicing with my Glidecam 4000 Pro and the Canon 5D Mark II. I'm really trying to master smooth and consistent movement while maintaining dynamic composition. Here is a few shots put together, basically to show off my new skills. There is still work to be done and I'm a far way off from mastering it - especially since I don't plan to purchase the body pod or any extras to help with stabilization.

Exposure and focusing weren't a main concern with these shots, just practicing movement and control.

All of this was shot with a Nikon 24mm f2.8, mostly at f11, but some near the end was f4. I have also be playing with a 15mm, 50mm and even 85mm....and getting some interesting results. I'll post up more when I get a bit better with the longer focal lengths.

The camera is mounted onto the Glidecam base plate with the Cine-City Pro Quick Release Plate which makes taking the camera on a off easy, and also speeds up balancing with new lenses etc.

(There is some ghosting here as I couldn't be bothered rendering a pixel motion interpolated 24p version)

Great stuff! I wonder if the Glidecam is easier to use than the Merlin? Balancing the 5D2 on a Merlin is a real pain!

Hey is the 4000 better than the 2000 for the 5d? By the way love the footage and I love the last vid you did of the skaters looked so rad cant wait to get a 5d mark 2 myself!

Excellent work. I've got a Glidecam 2000 but haven't had much opportunity to practice with it yet. This looks like you've really got the knack of keeping it steady. So far mine tends to pendulum too much. I'm using a Nikon 35mm prime. I had been using a Manfrotto quick release plate for ease of setup but abandoned it as I was getting better balance without it - even though I need a screwdriver with the 2000 to take the bloody camera on and off.

Thanks for the comments guys :) Tom, I hate the Merlin so I'm definitely going to say the Glidecam is better, for any camera. I've tested the Merlin with the Sony z1 and the 5D, and although i got it balanced eventually...its nothing compared to a perfectly balanced Glidecam (which is quicker and easier to set up). Sam, yes the 5D is awesome and I'm excited for you! Mike, I reckon the 4000 IS better than the 2000 for the 5d cos I maxed it out (only using one weight though) with my 85mm prime, so I imagine that the 2000 would need extra weights and end up being heavier in the end and harder to balance. Actually, I find it balances better with the quick-release plate as it ads extra weight to the top which I think it needs to be balanced properly - especially with a light weight lens like the 35mm 2.8 for example. Make sure you have a 'drop-time' of 1.5 - 2 seconds :)

I had another full day of gliding today and I'm trying new things....Although I had a skate my self and stacked pretty hard and now my gliding wrist is stuffed for a week or so....so a forced break is probably a good thing ;)

Great work! I hate the Merlin now, it looked so easy to setup on their video. It takes forever to get the balance right each time. When you are on a tight deadline, I prefer a shoulder mount than Merlin..

Merlin is designed for small cameras with very balanced COG. Anyway, we can not master it on 5D.

Thanks Bordesign :) Yes, Merlin not suited to the 5D but I guess it has its place with smaller digicams like you said.

    Nice footage, Matt! / MTS on Cinema5D? :) /
I use my Glidecam 2000 Pro (designed up to 2 kg) with 3 weights on both sides with a 17-40 4L lens - those little extra weights are really not heavy. So it looks like both the 2000 and 4000 models are fine for the 5D.

Thanks Joseph! Yes, 2000 model sounds good too...good to know :)

Nice Matt! You are tight on that GC. I use the 2000 Pro for the 5D which is nice because it's so small I can take it with me on flights. Keep doing whatever you are because it looks great.

Thanks Dave :) Yeppo, it seems the 2000 and 4000 are both fine for the delicious 5DII - I'm off to vienna soon so a 2000 would be great for the travel.....oh well ;)

Man, you are good with that Glidecam. Any advice for someone looking to get a Glidecam for the 5D MKII?

Thanks dude! If you are looking to get the glide cam for your 5d, I would suggest the 4000 Pro (cheaper than HD but still gets the job done) or like guys above have mentioned, the 2000 HD is fine too. A nice 24mm prime helps too ;)

It's good to see someone using the 5d, I've had it for awhile but haven't worked it into filming skating, aside from b-roll, facials, etc...
I think a big reason why I havent used it much in skating is I feel like it has a problem with fast moving action, I feel like skating has a strobe effect sometimes.
You can't beat if for the film/DOF look, and the low light!
I was wondering were your from, OZ, the states?
    The spots look good.

Hey Jason, if you shoot at 1/50 or 1/60 there is no strobing. Hell, I like shooting skating at 1/120 personally. I'm from OZ, Melbourne...that's were all these spots are.
