We've all been new and unknown at some point in our lives. That said, many of us haven't had to start over in a long time, and surely very few of us have been forced to flee our home or country. It takes empathy created in the crucible of suffering to be able to love the stranger as we would love ourselves. Remembering our mild to terrifying experiences of being a newbie, God calls us to be a people who build a legacy of welcome here in Silicon Valley. The interesting thing about the stories in Scripture is how often God's people were the new ones, the exiles forced to flee. God intentionally knit into the DNA of Israel a first-hand experience of what it's like to be a foreigner in a foreign land, to be a stranger in a strange land.
