Such wonderful shots here Karen!! What setting did you use to shoot then if this was all in-camera?
  • Thanks Blake! :-)

The things shot on film are with a bolex...they look sped up are shot at a lower frame rate, less than 24, so that when they are played on a normal projector they give the illusion that it is sped up...the opposite goes for the things that look like they are in slow motion (shoot at a frame rate above 24). 16mm film is a delicious thing.

  • Psh charlie! You're work is beautiful! hee hee thanks buddy!
  • I agree. The music amplifies the images. Great job
  • It's such a beautiful song, to a certain degree, I feel like I didn't do it justice, but I tried. :-)

This is awesome. I love the pacing. Great edit. Look at you! Dang.
  • Haha thanks Nshizack! I think the idea behind it was that..January 2007 was the biggest manipulation of time that i have ever experienced in my life. For one month, it felt like it lasted a year. Only a quarter of what I experienced in that month is exhibited by this clip. But it was a month that I shall never forget that transcended time and space.

Beautiful shots. I especially like the shots at about 0:44 and 1:11. The contrast is really nice.
  • *sigh* Trees are so beautiful. I don't do anything, they just are.

Superb ! How did you do to have so good smooth move ?
  • My friend Eddy and I took a dolly into the Nature Preserve at our school. Basically it's just 2 PVC pipes and a piece of board with wheels. We spent a day in the snow and tried to film a story without words...we just got a bunch of shots of trees. hahaha. I am a huge sucker for camera movement....so I will do almost anything to create it....skateboard....roller skate wheels....office chair....wagon....childrens toys....bicycle....chances are..if it moves..it can be used as a dolly.

Holy crap. Amazing. I am oh so jealous of your skills with a Bolex.

When you come back to GR, let's shoot something together.
  • Oh man I would love to shoot with you..I wish I had more fundage to visit GR..i miss it so much, it's really quite beautiful. If I'm ever gonna be in town, even for mere hours, I will let you know so we can shoot something.

    Here's more sexy Bolex/Arriflex action: vimeo.com/366085

do you guys get to shoot film at school?

I just found out recently that one of my close friends actually owns two 16mm cameras, one of which is a bolex, so I'm gonna try to do more 16mm. Also I'm shooting 16mm next semester.
  • Stephen Niebauer staff 2 years ago
We do get to shoot on film. I shot a short black and white on the Bolex last semester and have played around with the Arriflex BL. I want to do some more stuff with the Bolex. That is quite the sweet camera.

I am also in 16mm 2 class right now. We haven't started anything yet.

How much does it cost for you to get it onto a digital transfer? I know it's quite steep around here. Yours looks great in this piece.

The subtle slow smooth moves are so appreciated the titling (in essence) is another cool aspect of this project as well as to the meter of time (side of a tape) the tape passing that head maintaining current (real) time. this is definitely one clips to spend some time with! 5 likes!
  • OH man you can only imagine how awkward it was to Tilt my camera while trying to watch the screen and put the tape into the cassette player....that's why i missed the slot once and had to put it in again haha. Sometimes I think "man i'm so glad no one is watching me do this right now, its so awkward." I didn't want the cassette footage to be completely static.

I love slow movement so much...its so beautiful. I really appreciate your feedback, it means a lot to me. 5 Likes for your feedback! Thank you.

Watched it a couple time because I enjoyed so much how the images and the music flow as one (music builds as action does); quite emotional. Parts remind me of timelapse videos I love so much.
  • This is a really wonderful compliment. I feel emotional watching it..i love tress a lot. They are unreal.

I am taking a class on 16mm starting this saturday and am quite excited about it. It is through the Detroit Film Center. Your shots are very inspirational and you are extremely talented!
  • im so jealous! for the month of january im only taking one class for grad school. the semester doesn't start until the end of jan or beginning of feb. i am doing a cinematography class next semester and will be shooting 16. However, i just found out a good friend of mine has a couple 16mm cameras and a ton of super 8 cameras so we will hopefully write something to shoot soon.

Thank you for your kind words. I look forward to seeing your 16mm..it's so exciting!!!!!

  • This video is amazing.
I really like the music and each shot was timed perfectly.
And that short montage at the end with what looks like behind-the-scenes stills was also amazing with the music getting louder.

    Great job!!!
  • Thanks a lot Karl! The stuff at the end is so nostalgic for me. I wish i could go back to when I shot this stuff. Thanks a lot for watching :-)

So beautiful. I was trying to figure out how I missed this one, as I thought I was subscribed to your videos. Lo and behold, you were not my contact and I was not subscribed to your videos. Don't know how that happened, but it has been rectified. The music was a perfect choice for this. So inspriational.
  • You know what I was thinking, I was thinking of making a channel of my favorite work that I've made..because all the "what could be considered to be good stuff" gets lost among all my other videos. But I didn't know if it would be a chauncy move...so I'll have to think about it...but I do have an album with my better films.

This song is so beautiful...I've seen it used on probably 10 videos this week and it is just so incredible....

    Thanks doctor!
  • Ben Millett 2 years ago
I made such a channel. But of my work. Not yours. Granted, that was before they implemented albums, but I'm sure in some remote galaxy someone thinks I am deserving of my own "good stuff" channel. Oh, and those here on earth that have subscribed to it. You definitely should do a "best of" channel. I'd totally subscribe.
  •
  • ive used this same song on a 16mm montage. from the ma fluer album. really good stuff. i love this song. nice edit! really peaceful and meditative.
  • All your stuff is sooo solid. I want to start shooting more 16...i just wish it wasn't so expensive.

    This song is so beautiful
  •
  • your color 16mm is beuatiful as well!
  • What do you shoot with?

Can a man admit to wiping a tear away?

This film is beautiful, if not poetic. The thing that got me the most was the walk through the trees. I remember going hunting with my father - the very man who no longer speaks to me.

    Karen....you are truly an artist.
  • Oh man I had to watch this again as well. It's been a while. Usually it will take a while before I watch something again that I upload.

I think that's the best part about film, that you can interpret it in your own way and apply it to certain emotional contexts that you may have.

That is really touching about your father. I hope he realizes that he's missing out on a really incredible person.

Paul....you are too generous but I take all your words to heart and I appreciate them deeply. Thank you.
  • Paul Davis plus 2 years ago
    Well, I appreciate your films.

    And my father? pffffffffffffft

But that's how life can be sometimes. ;)

Have you seen the doco I think called "american movie"? about the guy shooting a horror flick on 16mm from wisconsin. that always reminds me of the price.
  • hmmm i want should check that out.

  • vandelayindustries 2 years ago
no matter how good digital cameras get, there is something about film that just can't be duplicated...they can get close but just don't have the depth like this footage has...nice
  • Agreed!

    Thanks sir.

This is soooooo great!! it's hypnotic and profound. your images have such incredible power. walking through the snow and the trees...those are unforgettable images that are going to be stuck in my mind forever. love the ending too, it surprised me.. but it's perfect for theme of the video. What is is about 16mm film? what is that anyway?? :) no, I'm serious really.. I just don't know much about it.
  • Wow Byron thank you for your kind words. You are a wonderful person. The ending...I honestly had no idea what to put and I had to watch what I had thus far and it made me think of just that entire month and so I decided to put photographs. oh dear nostalgia.

16mm is made of golden dreams and love. That's probably why it looks so good. I don't know. I have another 16mm on my vimeo and I just like its feel. vimeo.com/825260

    Thanks again Byron!
