I shot this video during two trips this month with Island Packers Cruises in Ventura Harbor to view Humpback and Blue Whales. They really put themselves out to hunt down the whales and give us an excellent experience.
Encounters with Common and Bottlenose Dolphins broke up the trip and offered me a unique opportunity to use my two water resistant cameras: a Kodak Playsport Zx5 and the GoPro HD Pro. Attached to the end of my monopod, I was able to shoot just a foot off the water and directly in front of the bow. This was a learning experience and I cannot wait until I have another opportunity to try to improve these shots.
The whales could not have been more cooperative. Blue Whales were swimming with the Humpbacks and several Humpbacks were swimming in pairs. And I was really fortunate to be filming a Blue Whale by the Condor Express out of Santa Barbara when a Humpback did a spectacular tail slap.
