Montage of slow motion scenes filmed around the south coast of Wellington, New Zealand during a wild storm on the 23rd of May, 2009.

Waves up to 14 metres and winds over 60 knots made for some pretty amazing clips including surfers at some of the more sheltered eastern bays and waves breaking over vehicles.

The best frame of the day was of a wave entering Houghton Bay: flickr.com/photos/8953623@N06/3559550710/sizes/l/

Some amazing shots there! We had some crazy wind up here in the Wairarapa, but those waves are incredible! Thanks for sharing.

Awesome video! but 14 meter swells??? that sounds a bit big. Sure it wasn't 14 ft?

The NZ media reported 14m swells in Cook Strait. Though the waves look big in the footage, they looked bigger in reality!

The surfers were well inside the harbour at Eastbourne and Seatoun, where the swell was much smaller than on the exposed coast. Some of the other shots are showing waves easily reaching 10 meters (30+ ft). I don't know if I saw any 14m waves myself, but however you look at it it's pretty damn big.
