Don Carmody has been producing films for more than 35 years. Graduating from one of Canada’s first university film programs in the early 70’s, he started in the business as a cast driver on Robert Altman’s McCABE AND MRS. MILLER.
He continued learning and paying his dues as a gofer, production assistant and eventually a location manager on a number of early Canadian feature films including THE APPRENTICESHIP OF DUDDY KRAVITZ and production manager for several small horror films for Cinepix Films in Montreal.
Eventually he became vice-president of production for Cinepix (now Lions Gate Films), where he co-produced David Cronenberg’s early shockers THEY CAME FROM WITHIN and RABID as well as the popular comedy MEATBALLS. Following the success of that film, he decided the time was right and headed to Hollywood.
Starting his own production company in 1980, Carmody has gone on to produce the smash hits PORKY’S and PORKY’S II, perennially popular family films like A CHRISTMAS STORY and THE MIGHTY, several Chuck Norris films, including THE HITMAN and SIDEKICKS, and cult favorites like THE BOONDOCK SAINTS, WRONG TURN and LUCKY NUMBER SLEVIN.
Over the years he has continued returning to comedy happily with films like the WEEKEND AT BERNIE’S series, THE WHOLE NINE YARDS and THE LATE SHIFT for HBO, which was nominated for seven Emmy Awards, three Cable Ace awards and the Producers’ Guild of America Golden Laurel. “The Late Shift” also won a Golden Globe for actor Kathy Bates and a Directors’ Guild Award for Betty Thomas.
His credits include some 90 films thus far, including many produced for the major Hollywood studios as well as the mini-majors like Lions Gate Films, Miramax and Summit Films. He has worked with many of the major stars of the industry including Jack Nicholson, Sean Penn, Hillary Swank, Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, Robert Downey Jr, Kevin Costner, Gene Hackman, Danny Devito, Robert De Niro, etc. etc.
In 2002 he was Co-Producer of the hit film musical CHICAGO starring Renée Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Richard Gere, which won seven Academy Awards© including Best Picture, three Golden Globe Awards including Best Musical or Comedy and the Producers’ Guild of America Golden Laurel Award for Best Picture as well as many, many other awards and honors around the world.
Following his genre instincts for both horror and comedy, Carmody recently branched out into the theatre world and was part of the production team for the Off-Broadway play “Evil Dead: The Musical,” a campy send-up of Sam Raimi’s cult classic horror films EVIL DEAD 1 AND II, which opened in New York to rave reviews, with touring companies active in Toronto, Sydney, Australia, Tokyo and Seoul, Korea.
Don Carmody was born in New England and immigrated to Canada with his parents as a boy. He graduated from film school in Montreal and has gone on to produce films all over the world. He currently lives in Toronto and Los Angeles.
