Tucked into the Andes, in a small mountain town of Agato on the outskirts of Otavalo, lives master weaver Miguel Andrango. He comes from a long line of traditional backstrap loom weavers and is one of the only people left in this region that still maintains the old traditions and customs.
We were lucky enough to him have take us through the time honored process from sheep through loom explaining each of the laborious steps of hand spinning and hand weaving in loving detail. It is humbling to see what goes into each piece. The results are beautiful and the quality and craftsmanship unparalleled.
I felt the urgency in his voice as he discussed the fact that this way of working will soon be lost and is hoping to start a school to pass his knowledge on to the next generation.
