8. Buderim Rainforest on the 500D
I just got my grubby little mitts on one of the newish Canon 500D Digital SLR camera's.

This was my first time out with the camera and I only had about an hour and half, which was a shame, because I think I could have stayed up in that rainforest all day it was that fun.

Shot on the stock 18-55 lens and an old 70-300.

I was quite impressed with the quality of the footage and love the depth of field, but I can't wait to get some fast lenses, as the ones I have leave quite a bit to be desired.

All shots are straight out of the camera with no colour correction.

was that in 1080 p. looks fairly pixilated in the shade

I shot it in 720P. The raw files look fantastic, no pixellation.

I edited directly in H.264 and then exported to an even lossier H.264. Definitely not the way to do things.

Luke Patterson, the pixelation you're referring to isn't anything to do with if it is 720/1080/VGA it's the compression.

Vimeo's compression has gotten worse recently, alot of stuff looks very pixelated now.

Glad I never paid for the membership yet!

I have noticed that on all videos on here these days.

YouTube is now comparable for quality.

    Bad news for Vimeo!

I disagree with that Robert :)
You Tube could never be as good as Vimeo is :)))
And the big factor is Vimeo doesn't put up with some the idea from YT that leave nasty and stupid comment on everyones videos :)))))))))

Oh, also nice video, this camera does great stuff for it's price, a very good B-cam for any 5D owners.
  • Christian Fitzpatrick plus 7 months ago
Thanks Alex, yeah it does the job okay. Would love a 5DMKII, but for what I need it for, this will do the job for now.

Maybe when one with 25P, full manual control and intra-frame compression comes along, I'll spend the cash! :)

I'd love a 24p version but i'd be willing to work around the problems with this camera. I wondering if that update for the 5D that comes out tomorrow i think, would work on the 500D.
  • Christian Fitzpatrick plus 7 months ago
I have pondered this myself but I doubt very much that it will work on the 500D as is.

I have a feeling though, that once it's implemented on the 5D MKII, it shouldn't be too hard for a hacker to take a look at the firmware, see how it's been done and apply that to the 500D by way of a firmware hack.

    Fingers crossed! :)

    Hey Jared,

Thanks for the positive feedback mate. Yeah those spider shots came out alright considering it was a dodgy old 70-300mm lens that came with my 350D all those years ago.

Can't wait for some good glass. I just got my hands on the Tokina 11-16mm 2.8, so I might have to do another trip up there.

I didn't make it all the way to the biggest falls last time as I only had limited time. Now I have an excuse to go back! :)

even though the 70-300 is old, it still looks extremely sharp on the 500d

the 11-16 will look amazing with the wide angle rainforest shots.. keep up the great work!

I have an old sigma aspherical 28-210 f3.5 lens on from my EOS Elan II. Will that work on the 500D too?

Great clarity. Loved the spider, even though he gives me the creeps!
