After many days of rain we finally had a nice spring day. The urge to go outside was irresistible, I grabbed my D90, a few lenses and headed towards Union square late in the afternoon. Lots of people enjoying themselves. I was lucky that day to be invisible. Unfortunately I don't have control over it, some days it works, some it does not, and on those days when it does not work, I don't get anything. CAUTION: In case you are offended by nudity in abstract form - please close your eyes at 0:34 sec you can re-open them at 0:39 sec. Music: jazzanova - the remixes 1997-2000 - 06 - karma - high priest. More about this shoot can be found here

Captured the atmosphere perfectly. Good soundtrack choce too.

How did you manage the slow-motion?
(and what tripod did you use?)

I love the 0:49 shot and the guy @ 1:09 made me laugh in a good way. Great shot!

thanks guys, slowed down in fcp, small no name tripod with professional head and low shooting angles.

Thanks for sharing this with me. I enjoyed it very much.

I have a few questions about editing footage from the D90 -
    1. Do you scale your footage to 1080p when editing or rendering, or do you edit and render in 720p?
    2. What frame-rate do you output in? Is it in 24 fps itself or do you pull it up or down?
  • Mike Kobal plus 2 years ago
Thanks JoeKr. I convert to prores422 before editing in fcp. saves time (no rendering after the clips have been converted) keep it in 720p, in this particular video I slowed a few clips down to 50%. some even more. I am really looking forward to get a camera with real slomo capacities.

It' so easy for a New Yorker--we're talking about Manhattan here, not Queens or the Bronx or some other foreign country--to see this sort of thing as ho hum, what else is new, so when something like this clip comes along that is pitch perfect, it's a real treat. I don't know what prompted you to add me as a contact, but I'm glad you did, Mike.

D90 rocks when a PRO use it.... cool capture, cool edition, cool sound chosen, the best of best's is the shallow depth of field like in 35mm film.
So mr: Mike what lenses are used please.
  • Mike Kobal plus 2 years ago
    Thanks Luan. voigtlander 58mm 1.4, 75-150mm 3.5, 17-35mm 2.8, 24-70mm 2.8

Hey, Just joined the site and just got a d90. This video really caught my attention with the post process work. What program do you use to do all the post processing. I see you said fcp, I just don't know what that is. Can you lead me in the direction to more info on what programs to use? Keep the videos coming! thanks a lot.

  • Mike Kobal plus 2 years ago
thanks Dan. the D90 is a great camera. on pc, use pinnacle ultimate, awesome program around 100bucks, on mac use final cut pro. or final cut express.

"NYC Spring Day: Nikon D90" for my prejudiced mind indicates -a guy going to a park and shooting random things-. It's pretty much that.

But you worked wonders with it. You Sir are a talented artist with an eye for keen human observation. Filters are too "warm" for my taste, the moving you got off people are intriguing. I loved the bit with bussinessman punching his cellular for a second and move out in a rush. Since you work in very low angles, don't you get any negative reaction from the people on street? I mean could easily address you as "hey perv, are you shooting my legs?" :). Sorry for the long rant.
  • Mike Kobal plus 2 years ago
haha thanks Ugur. its a rant, alright.

some very nice captures and composition ~

i guess d90 does not have 60fps, though if it did, it would have perfected this neat work.
  • Mike Kobal plus 2 years ago
thanks MuratCo, true. thats why I got the GH1 now.
