Retirees Chant for Unity
When fans file into Olympic venues over the next few weeks, they'll be greeted by squads of chanting retirees.
Led by a flag waving team leader, and clad in bright yellow shirts, these Beijingers have learned to cheer in a uniquely Chinese style. Ten thousand Beijing pensioners have been meeting at neighborhood workers' halls across the city since December. The meet once a week to practice yelling, clapping and singing in unison.
These cheerleaders will be fully clothed, and don't plan to shake their hips like the Chinese cheerleaders trained by the New England Patriots cheer squad.
Instead, they're promoting peace and unity.
"We're not only cheering for the Chinese team. We welcome our friends around the world to Beijing," said Chen Jinmei, a 54 year old Beijinger.
