JVC GY HM-100 shot at 720 60p rendered to 24p and Graded with Sony Vegas 9 Day & Night scenes.
Thinks I like about the cam.
-Light weight
-Solid state 35 Mbps
-Picture quality
- Multi- Formats 24p 20p 60p etc.
-low light is good but not up to par with the Sony EX1 but in line with the Canon A1

Thinks I dislike
-No iris ring on lens.. the EX with its manual lens has spoiled me. It Takes me a long time to set up when shooting manual. I need time to get use to the cam.
- LCD viewing angle changes when the lcd screen is rotated.

Next I WILL TAKE MY CANON 5D MARK 2 , EX1 AND HM-100 OUT FOR A SIDE BY SIDE SHOOT

Brian, nice work. I am really interested the the 3-way comparison as I am HD cam shopping. The Panasonics just have too soft an image for my needs. The three you have are what I am looking at. I have a few questions:
    - How much of a pain is the iris button on the HM100?
    - Is the zoom control rocker smooth and can you get a really slow speed?

THE iris will take some getting use to its a switth that you push to the up or down position at the back of the cam, with partice you can get a slow speed with the rocker. If you can afford the extra bucks go with the EX1 the JVC would be my second pick.

The iris control is sharing the same dial as the shutter and audio dial. To adjust iris, you would need to press the iris button 1st, then adjust with the dial. Do the same to adjust shutter. Without pressing any of the button before hand, you would be adjusting audio monitoring. This becomes a pain when you're using a mixer that takes return audio from the camera. A cameraman might accidently adjust audio monitoring when in fact he wanted to adjust iris.

Zooming is bit of a problem. Zoom and focus is controlled by the same ring. Switch to select desired function. Or use servo control on palm or on LCD. I wasn't really able to do a good enough zoom in & out with either of it... or maybe I just suck at zooms.

Brian, what has got me a little concerned about the EX-1 is the IR contamination issue. What is your opinion since you own one.

Thanks Brian, I really like the manual control features of the EX1. Since I shoot 95% nature subjects I am hoping the "ir" issue is a non-issue. Your sample video of the HM100 is outstanding quality but I think I would be more comfortable with the EX1. Still looking forward to your comparison shoot out.

Hi Brian, your 60p to 24p images are good! Nice work. Did you use any gain on night shots?
  • FindMeInTheH TV pro 2 years ago
Gain set to 0 except one on the model scenes gain was at 3

  • Looks like on some of the darker shots you didn't meter all that much, but the review seemed to be right on.
    Good job overall.
