The music is a voice improvisation recorded using mostly the laptop mic, and then near the end a couple supporting harmonies were recorded with a proper mic and used as contrasting sound.

The video portion was shot along the West Side Highway in NYC, I suppose around the upper 50s or so. There was a lot of construction going on and I thought it looked pretty fascinating.

I used a very standard point and shoot to collect the footage, and AfterEffects to composite it together.

The video was produced for my interactive website, where circular and hexagon-shaped videos can be clicked on their panels and turned. You can see this one, as well as two other circles and two hexagons, there: theturn.tv

Hi Blake. Thanks so much for posting this in staff picks! And thanks for the encouragement folks. :)

To answer your question, I import the footage into AfterEffects and generally do all the compositing work manually, placing the panels and shifting them around on a center axis. Sometimes it's a bit like needlepoint, quite time-consuming, but I prefer working that way, the simpler the better.

Hope that answers your question, Blake. :) Again, thanks!

These circular videos are developed my interactive site, where the panels are clickable and turn the video. If you are interested please check them out here: theturn.tv

@ Matthew Brown - I hadn't heard Lisa Gerard so did a youtube search and Sanvean is in exactly the same key and make great accompaniment! hahah!

Really glad you enjoy the circles. Do check out The Sad Song video which is the first one I did, and probably one of my best songs/videos. Or The Turn, which is a similar idea but horizontally.

Hey Fredo, I would think about submitting your stuff to the disposable film festival - disposablefilmfestival.com/submit/
  • Fredo Viola plus 2 years ago
Hey, thanks Blake! I'm going to, definitely. And at .99 a pop I could enter them all! Ha. Do you think that would be a mistake to do? Maybe I should just enter the circles, plus Moon in Hall, plus The Turn, as these were the ones shot with "low-end" point and shoots...? What do you think?
  • Blake Whitman staff 2 years ago
yeah, I would enter the ones shot with your point and shoot as that is what they are looking for.

Fantastic. I really like the shape of the video being a circle. Also, I love the movement within each of the screen how they are not entirely matched up with each other. There are new time-space behaviors created here in the piece.

    Fredo,

Thank you for making such beautiful things - things that elicit a desire in the throat - to live more - to feel voice returning and welling up...and for the eye - Could you project some of your work on the dome of a planetarium...That'd be full coverage....
