My video brings to life the reason for graffiti on Main Street and in Buffalo itself. It will explore the origin of graffiti in Buffalo, its place on Main Street and its recent position in Buffalo’s art scene. The goal of this video is to show graffiti as an art and not just a form of vandalism.
Buffalo's Main Street was the topic of Squeaky Wheel's BUFFALO YOUTH MEDIA INSTITUTE in 2006. A collaboration between Squeaky Wheel and Preservation Buffalo Niagara, the BUFFALO YOUTH MEDIA INSTITUTE is a youth media and community history initiative which gives up to 20 young people (age 13-18/8th-12th grade) from Buffalo, NY and surrounding areas the opportunity to learn about the history of their local community by making documentaries about Buffalo. The project starts in September and ends in June and has been funded by the John R. Oishei Foundation, the Margaret L. Wendt Foundation, the Baird Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
