When you’re paid to tell a visual documentary by an entity other than a trusted brand in the media, what are the guidelines regarding standard journalistic ethos regarding objectivity, bias, transparency. In an age where everyone is the media, and the media is increasingly guided by the same corporate mentality as major multinational corporations, who is the holder of the truth? Are we better off, or worse, than the times in which the news was domain of just a few broadcasters and publishers? In this discussion, veteran producers of traditional as well as “solutions-based” journalism will share their insights into telling fair and balanced storytelling on a client’s payroll.
Kevin Sparkman is the vice president and co-founder of Fusionspark Media in Medford, NJ, where his responsibilities include strategic planning, executive production, and business development.
Scott Anger is the creative director and founder of Pandau. For more than 25 years, Scott has worked as a journalist, photographer and award-winning documentary filmmaker. Most recently, he was the Director of Video at The Los Angeles Times where he led a department of full-time video journalists and developed editorial video strategy for the organization.
Tom Reese’s work as a newspaper and magazine photojournalist has been nominated for Pulitzer Prizes in breaking news photography, feature photography and explanatory reporting, and also honored by World Press Photo, Pictures of the Year International and International Conservation Photography Awards. Tom is an independent photographer and editor working in documentary and illustration. The Seattle Art Museum Gallery represents a selection of his work. Other documentary subjects include a nine-year project on early-onset Alzheimer’s disease, human rights in Burma, and a book pondering the connections and competition between humans and their natural environment. He also teaches workshops on photojournalism ethics and environmental journalism.
