On October 10th, 2008, Bryan Bowers and Garrett Sullivan visited the Windy Ridge Bristlecone Pine Scenic Area near Alma, Colorado. After a hearty breakfast at the Brown Burro Restaurant in Fairplay, we drove as close as we could get to the park with a 2 wheel drive low riding Volkswagen. After abandoning the car at a mining ruin, we walked about a mile to the park at 11,700 feet. It was a sunny, cool day, and like the park sign said: "Windy". We walked the ridge for about an hour, taking in the majesty of the barren ridge with so many gnarled bristlecones. We gathered a few specimens and took in the view of Alma.
We went back to Fairplay to Bryan's Van. Bryan had a concert to play that night in Glenwood Springs and he called his contact for directions to the hall where he was to play. I marveled at his hand written directions and mental sticky notes that he tucked away before driving over Hoosier Pass, through Breckenridge and beyond. (There is another story to be told...)
It was a day to remember, with a friend I will never forget.
