56. JAG35 Pro Depth of Field Adapter - First Impressions
6 months ago
I really like the $400 JAG35 Pro depth of field adapter. I am testing it out on my Sony HDR-SR11 and the results speak for themselves. All of the audio was recorded off the SR11's camera mic while the JAG was vibrating! It is very quiet!

Total cost of the the camera, adapter and lens: $1,200. Just goes to show that you do not need to spend thousands to shoot sick looking video.

This adapter does have limitations and you should understand them all before you buy it. Please read my blog for detailed information about my first impressions.

This is a great adapter for those of you who own the small HD cameras and want a cheap way to get the "film look" on video. This adapter will not replace Letus adapters.

I am using a 5 micron ground glass and you can get more info on this adapter at jag35.com

SWEET. You basically sold me on this. Cheap enough for me to buy and practice. God knows I need it.

looking forward to what you shoot with the SR11. did you buy a jag yet?
  • Matt Stapleton plus 6 months ago
In the process. I shot a quick video over the weekend at a local carnival using the SR11 and a few filters. It is viewable on my vimeo page. Towards the end I filmed my son so I wasn't being as creative in my shots, more or less documenting him.

check out jag35.com to see all the cameras you can connect this dof adapter to. I think you can.

Did you add any of the vignette or blurry edges or is that inherent in the adapter?
  • Tom Guilmette plus 6 months ago
this is a cheaper adapter than what i am use to. i found the edge to edge sharpness was not perfect, but pretty good. it is much sharper when shooting in better light.

    Hey Tom,

Did you notice the pixelation occuring in the latest vimeo uploads. I didn't notice it in your video at first but now I do. I uploaded a video this morning and was dissapointed with some pixelation in some scenes. I uploaded the same vid to my facebook page and it is displaying FANTASTIC compared to vimeo.

I notice the pixelation in your video as well (pause the last shot). Saw a forum post that said they are encoding in a couple of different formats and one displays the pixelation.

I did notice that Facebook's Video feature has way better encoding than vimeo, what's up with that? Has anyone figure out what the best settings for uploading on vimeo are?
  • Tom Guilmette plus 6 months ago
here are my encode secrets for vimeo or any web based hd site: (this applies to mac computers with final cut pro)

I am using “Quicktime Conversion” in the file-export menu of Final Cut Pro.
    My settings are:
Format: Quicktime Movie then click “options”
    Video:
    Settings:
    Compression Type: H.264
    FPS: Current
Keyframes: Auto with Frame Re-ordering checked
Compressor Quality: High with Best Quality Multi-pass selected
Data Rate: Restrict to 3000 kbits/sec
    Optimized for: Download
    Filter: n/a
Size: 1280×720 HD uncheck “Deinterlace Source Video” and “Preserve Aspect Ratio”
    Sound Settings:
    Format: ACC
    Channels: Stereo
    Rate: 44.100 kHz
    Render Settings: Normal at 128kbps
Check “prepare for internet streaming” and select “Fast Start”

i should look into facebook. perhaps i will try it.

Great video Tom, and thanks for sharing. Having to shoot everything "inverted" has got to be mind boggling.

I also noticed that facebook provides better streaming video than Vimeo. I use almost the same export settings as you, except that I do not limit the data rate, and if it is a music video I use the highest setting for audio. I also do not select "fast start." I think "fast start" means "compressed header," is that right? Cheers, Paul

solution for screen, you can put small powerful Magnet on the screen it work well and easy to use.
  • Tom Guilmette plus 6 months ago
never tried that. does the magnet fool the lcd? is this like the flip hack? never heard of this.
  • Matt Stapleton plus 6 months ago
Tom, I saw a video on the web that showed a guy use a small magnet to flip the lcd (could be a magnetic switch). He did point out it didn't work for all cameras. Going to test it on the SR11 when I get home.
  • BMG 6 months ago
    I have Sr11 it works ("_")

    Nice shots Tom!
How did you get it to be so stable while rack focusing?
    thx
  • Tom Guilmette plus 6 months ago
nice vinten sturdy tripod and very careful fingertips.

  • Matt Stapleton plus 6 months ago
    Tom,

I am going to try to modify an ipod cover (one with an open face) and elastic backing. I will sew on a little pouch onto the elastic backing to contain the magnet. Slip it over the lcd and away we go.
  • Tom Guilmette plus 6 months ago
let me know if that works.
  •
  • Very very good!!!

just so you all know, the ground glass inside this JAG35 Pro is 5 microns. whatever that means!
  •
  • OneClickFilms, LLC 6 months ago
For that price, why WOULDN'T you purchase one. Especially for the results. Yeah it may be a little tweaky, but all the adapters seem to have their little nuances. That's just too cool.

    Tom,

Looks like you selected the wide angle (conversion lens) option in the SR-11's menu. Any particilar reason for this?

This is by far the best/sharpest jag35 footage I've seen yet. How did you get the image to be so sharp? I'm having a little trouble with mine. Seems I can never really get a subject into complete focus like you did here.
