To be quite honest, growing up I never heard of New Zealand until I saw the Lord of the Rings movie; I'm pathetic I know. lol I was amazed by its beauty and promised myself to go there one day. But I wasn't sure where in NZ I would want to visit until I saw this special on the Travel Channel about Milford Sound. I was just speechless after I saw the program and I knew where in NZ I wanted to see. I booked my flights and hotel at the nearest town (Queenstown) and began to prepare.

I also started to think about a song for the video; which I feel is the most important part of any video. After 2 months of listening to a variety of material, I finally decided to go with Sigur Ros 's Hoppipolla. I would listen to the song and imagine if I was making a music video in NZ. I always feel you can never go wrong with Sigur Ros especially when filming landscapes and nature.

Scenes are mixed with hand held recording and some using a tripod( did not want to carry that thing everywhere with me on my vacation!). Everything is edited in IMOVIE09; I have no clue how to use the Final Cut programs, IMOVIE09 is easier :o). I hope you all enjoy it.!

This video is dedicated to the people of New Zealand.I want to thank you for your kind hospitality from the day I landed in Auckland.

I also want to thank the staff from Real Journeys who made the tours very fun and memorable and the staff at the Mercure Resort for making my stay comfortable.

I feel like a different man coming back from this trip... can't wait to go back!

  • what lenses?

I used the 17-40mm F/4L and a circular polarizer filter from B+W. Loved the way it took pictures too. Need a wide Lens for NZ.

Great video, very well done. I prefer working with Final Cut but if iMovie '09 is what does it for you then no complaints!

I ordered a training book today for it, after I bought the software and loaded it in and was like HUH!?!?!?! lol
  • Sasha Kalicki 2 years ago
Haha that's funny if you're interested a good training book is "Final Cut Express Editing Workshop" by Tom Wolsky (assuming this is FCE you have, not Final Cut Pro). That's how I learned and I bet I'd have the same resopnse as you if I didn't learn that way.

    HI Ian,

Thanks for the info on the Japan post production. Just saw another mixture of video, still and music and they had coined it "fusion videos." Not a bad name for it. Wonder if it will stick. We are indeed seeing the pioneering of this new genre in examples like this NZ Video.

Absolutely wonderful, you really did justice to this magnificent place. I loved the shot you did early on, where the camera viewpoint rose from the ground to the stunning view.

I'm going there in January for my honeymoon!

The video is absolutely gorgeous, thank you so much!

Thanks! And congrats! Have you been there before? Im not sure if you have not heard of this... but there is a overnight thing on one of the Doubtful Sound or Milford Sound rides. You can sleep over night on the nature boat and from what they have told me, its an experience. It's quiet at night and you can hear the water and other things.

We haven't but I will definitely look into it. We are doing both Island but we'll be spending the last 3 days in Queenstown.

Nice, if this is your first time in Queenstown, If you dont want to take a taxi, they have a bus stop right outside of the airport called Connectabus, they show up every 30mins. This bus will take you everywhere, into Queenstown, the Remarkables shopping center, and Arrowtown.

Also there is a nice lake side trail outside of the Queenstown Garden, that will take you to Frankton; where the airport is at. Very nice long walk.

They have internet cafes in town, one inside on the second floor of the O'Connells Shopping Centre; this is where the main bus stop is at. On the bottom floor they have a food court.

I recommend at least going to a restaurant called the Thai Siam for breakfast. They serve a good english breakfast, you will not leave hungry.
