i am using the Slo-Mo lip-sync technique with an upcoming music video. So this could be applied in the same way with 720 24p/n HVX footage, by taking the original over cranked 36FPS footage with the singer singing singing at the song sped up (36 fps: the song lasts 0.840x as long as normal; played at 119.05% speed), and when it is converted to 24FPS the sync should match up with the original song. Right?

I am using the song lengths provided by Barry Green in this post on DVXuser

    dvxuser.com/V6/showpost.php?p=891871&postcount=5

Very complicated question. sorry, but i figure you are a wiz at these kind of things!

    Thanks phillip

i am sorry. am far from a wiz at these things...
  • Dillon C. Novak plus 2 years ago
I just tried it and it did work! But that was 60i with my xh-a1, now just to try it with the HVX.

    thanks for this video!
  • Chris Newman 2 years ago
You should NOT need to convert anything if you are using Barry Greens calculations with the HVX. I've used them before and it worked perfectly. vimeo.com/993677. After you film it overcranked to the artist singing faster then just sync up the footage and audio track and you should be good to go. I'd do some tests first on your own.

Is there any way we could compare the current 24p version, of the video used in your tutorial, with the old 30p one. I would love to see the difference...

    Cheers!

Thanks for posting this Philip! Until I saw details of what was actually going on, I had not yet satisfactorily converted 30p to 24p. Hands on is great!

I was wondering about that too. I just bought me a Canon 5D Mark II, but I use a laptop with Windows operational system. What program could I use for editing video on Windows? And, concerning color correction, can I use Magic Bullet Looks on Windows?

    Hello,
this method is ok for transform the 30P to 25P ?

I'm interested by the DSLR but I'm also mix with my XH A1 (25P)...

    ;)
  • Philip Bloom pro 2 years ago
yep, just change to 25p in cinema tools

  • Berkay Ferah 2 years ago
why we didnt choose 24p? and always choose 23.98
  • Philip Bloom pro 2 years ago
24p is for film out. 23.98 is for NTSC
  • 23.98 is what syncs with NTSC drop frame audio - it's like using 29.97 instead of 30p

    Hi,
Cinema tools is just on mac ?
I edit on adobe premiere, on PC, arg... !!!!
30p to 25p is only for the mac user's ;)

what is the équivalent on PC ?

thank you very much and congratulation for your work.
  • Jackson Miller 2 years ago
There are alternatives for PC's but I don't think philip knows them nor do I. Read/search/post on DVXuser.com in the mark D2 section. They'll be able to tell you the best option for pc guys.

i wonder if the "interpret footage" in After Effects-is enough to do, instead of this whole long process... :\

After Effects will do the trick. Check out this tutorial by Andrew Kramer on Video CoPilot.

Philip, i just discovered youre videos and am completely addicted, great stuff, thank you very much for posting these video. I was just wondering if you had any compressor tutorials or what settings you use, im very new to compressor and cant even come close to the quality of your videos at even triple the file size.
  • Philip Bloom pro 2 years ago
i don't use Compressor for my videos, i will do a quicktime tutorial though!
  • Scott Morrison 2 years ago
That would be greatly appreciated, because to get a video of that quality and length for only 146mb is awesome and i would love to know how to do it. thanks a ton.

So how do you feel about the 5d2 versus the Gh1 now that the 5D2 Firmware update has arrived Phil?

Would you still rather have the GH1 in your bag?

    Just wondering.

I love both, but the 5d is far superior but much pricier. I will own both...but given a choice, one or other price no object. the 5dmk2 it is

Does this method introduce ghosting? I tried it with some footage, and two other methods. The best and most accurate was AE's Pixel Blend. The others had stuttering or ghosting going on.

  • Igor Vignjevic 2 years ago
This thing you can do in GV Edius 4.6 or 5 much easier. Simply in clip properties click 24fps and with Alt+E change duration to original. All works in real time and looks beter than in Final Cut. I use it all the time.

    Nice job... two questions:

    1) Can this workflow be applied to 60i footage?
    2) Where in this workflow would you do your Magic Bullet Looks color grading?

I was wondering if I'll get the Canon 5D Mark II because of the frame rate. Now I know it's not such a problem...
Until, maybe, someone create a firmware to record at a more convenient 25p/24p frame rate.

    Hi Philipp,

what do you think that the method with After Effects ?
    it's easier is not it?
but the result is probably worse ... ?
  • Philip Bloom pro 2 years ago
sorry for late reply. have very little after effects experience.
  • Somethin' Else plus 1 year ago
The AE interpolate function is great, but your clips will all end up being longer and your audio out of sync. It's basically the same as what he's doing here with Cinema Tools. You still have the same problem of getting it back to the right speed.
  •
  • This video is a little slow-paced. The same content could be covered in a paragraph of text....

Does anyone know if this produces significantly better results than nesting the 30p sequence in a 23.98 sequence within FCP? I am skeptical that this method is worth the conversion step in Compressor....
  • Philip Bloom pro 2 years ago
it is actually covered in about 4 paragraphs of text by Denver Riddle. I turned it into Video so people could follow.

Only way to find out Garrett is to try!
  • Haha. Touche. I'm sure that a lot of people appreciate your tutorial. I'll do the great 10-up 24p conversion test, comparing the results with pixel-peeping methods.... someday. Meanwhile, the 7D is quite nice.

This is really just the perfect tutorial for the thousands of us out there who, until the now announced but as yet undated firmware release, are looking for the best ways to convert 30p to 25p etc.

One quick question for you, why do you not use Pro Res 422 (HQ)? Is the (HQ) version simply not necessary?

    Many thanks.

  • Benjamin Buettner plus 2 years ago
i tried this method a thousand times, doesn't work at all.
its all ok till changing the duration in compressor. just put the preset setting onto my clip, change the duration and click "submit".
But my final clip is just as long as my original 24p file created in cinema tools.
any ideas what i'm doing wrong?
  • Somethin' Else plus 1 year ago
Make sure you are clicking on the setting that is actually on the clip (not the one in the presets bin). I did that the first time.

  • Nick Layton 2 years ago
Thank you for taking the time over this. Really really appreciated. However, there's something that's bugging me. I've just uploaded mpg streamclip and when you start the conversion process, you're offered the chance to alter the frame rate right with the absolutely enormous files that streamclip generates. As there are points where syncing to music becomes a must at various points in the video, I just thought it would be better to do this right at the start of the conversion? Or do you not like the quality that comes from streamclip?

Thanks for the tip. It's the closest I've come to finding a fix, but found that if you have something passing close to the lens, it blur's the image big style. Does get rid of the jitter though! Any more tips please let me know

    Hello Phillip,

what do you think about setting the frame rate at 25 in the MPEG stream clip, when you are converting it to PRO RES?
  •
  • This method is pretty useless if you want to use the original sound of the footage and with that, I mean with a proper dialog, people talking... and you should explain that, because that is the key part, original footage sound goes completely out of sync. What's so great about this you show if what you use is background music? The only way it works, as far as I know smoothly is with JES Deinterlace. The other method you explain in your other video in your website is also useless, converting to Quicktime ProRes 422LT at 25p does not solve the issue, since the footage does not run smoothly since the only thing quicktime does is drop 5 frames and you can see how the video jumps on play... so... do you have anything else? :)

thanks anyway... and keep on the good work

What about 59.94 with some Cinema Tools footage what was slowed down to 29.97. Timeline is 59.94 and need a non-choppy output at 29.97.....can something like this be done or just let compressor do it's thing?

Great tutorial, but it won't sync properly if you enter the timecode from the original 30p timeline. You have to drop the original audio track into the 24p timeline THEN enter the timecode from the 24p timeline into Compressor.

  • Andrew Daugherty 7 months ago
Is there frame blending in this? When converting 30p to 24p I've noticed that it is generally either choppy or you have to use frame blending which looks kind of weird. But technically isn't it impossible to get it perfectly smooth? Is it basically just throwing out every fifth frame or what? Thanks! Great video by the way.

whats the different if we just convert it to 24 fps with compressor instead of using this long progress with mpeg streamclip n compressor? thanks
